Assistant/Associate Professor Resilient Infrastructure

Updated: over 1 year ago
Deadline: 01 Sep 2022

Are you passionate about designing infrastructure systems and their interconnections so that they are resilient and less vulnerable to disruptions?

Infrastructure systems are the backbones of our societies. Without resilient transport, logistics, energy, and ICT infrastructures, we are unable to serve different parts of the society when faced with disruptions such as pandemics, natural disasters, conflicts, or blocking a motorway or a waterway. The Covid-19 pandemic, the new trade wars, or the blocking of harbors in the black sea, for instance, have shown how vulnerable our transport systems are to disruptions. Disruptions in logistics due to regional conflicts significantly affect the delivery of food, medicine, and other basic necessities, which affect the well-being of millions of people in various parts of the world. This implies that we need to design our infrastructure systems such that they are able to maintain their essential functions by absorbing, responding, rapidly recovering from, and adapting to shocks and stresses.

For this position, we are looking for someone who is passionate about designing infrastructure systems and their interconnections so that they are resilient and less vulnerable to disruptions. The ideal candidate has knowledge about infrastructure systems and their interdependencies, and has expertise in modelling and analyzing the impact of disruptions (human-made, cyber, and natural) on those systems. The position is suitable for candidates who have a socio-technical understanding of the infrastructure when both physical and societal aspects of the systems need to be jointly considered.

The successful candidate will be a member of the section Transport & Logistics and will be closely working with colleagues from other sections within the department ESS (Energy & Industry, and ICT). The department ESS is an excellent place where leading experts are working on different infrastructures including transport, logistics, energy, and ICT.

The candidate should have:

• A PhD degree (or is about to finish a PhD soon) in Transportation, Logistics, Infrastructure management or Industrial Engineering
• Experience with academic teaching (and possibly with a university teaching qualification);
• An excellent command of English.

We offer talented academics a clear and attractive career path with the expectation that you will have the potential to grow into a full professor position in the future. If you perform well, the intention is to convert your contract into a permanent one. At the start of your employment, agreements will be made about this based on our performance indicators.

During the selection procedure, it will be determined, depending on your background and experience, whether you are eligible for an assistant professor Tenure track (tudelft.nl) position or an associate professor.

Inspiring, excellent education is our central aim. We expect you to obtain a University Teaching Qualification (UTQ) within three years if you have less than five years of teaching experience. This is provided by the TU Delft UTQ programme.

TU Delft sets high standards for the English competency of the teaching staff. The TU Delft offers training to improve English competency. If you do not speak Dutch, we offer courses to learn the Dutch language within three years.
