Assistant/Associate Professor Additively Manufactured FRP Composites in Engineering Structures

Updated: 17 days ago
Deadline: 11 Apr 2024

Bridges and wind turbine towers are two main areas in need of resilient high-performance materials. Fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites are showing great promise. Yet to meet future demand, it is crucial to develop technologies to sustainably produce resilient FRP structures in high volumes. As an assistant or associate professor in additively manufactured FRP composites, you will get the opportunity to develop a truly unique research line. Would you like to drive the transformation from manual to automated manufacturing applications in the construction sector with experimental and numerical research geared to support ‘3D printed’ FRP structures?

Automated and additive manufacturing (AM) techniques could resolve the current production and quality control limitations of FRP composite structures. To ultimately develop high-volume ‘3D printing’ methods, you will generate knowledge of the mechanical performance of AM FRP materials. You will develop novel multi-scale experiments, advanced measuring methods and physics-based AI-aided numerical methods for predicting performance of additively manufactured FRP structures. To enable your research, our Macro Mechanics Laboratory is at your disposal. You will attract funding from government authorities, the Dutch Research Council or industrial partners, and build and supervise your team of PhD students. You will be responsible for teaching undergraduate and graduate students and collaborate with other faculty members to supervise thesis projects.

You will join our internationally diverse and inclusive team of world-recognized leading scientists in Steel and Composite Structures (SCS) research. Contributing to our reputation, you will disseminate your knowledge at leading conferences and in scientific papers, and further expand our network. Developing resilient and sustainable (infra)structures, we share the Engineering Structures department’s drive to meet societal demands related to transportation, the energy transition and sustainable reuse. As a welcoming and collaborative group of 20+ academics, PhD students, postdocs, project leaders and master students, we will give you all the support, training and coaching you need to develop your academic career. Depending on your level of seniority, you yourself will coach more junior colleagues.

The Department of Engineering Structures focuses on the development of resilient, smart and sustainable structures and infrastructures. Our aim is to meet societal demands in transportation, the energy transition and sustainable reuse. Research themes include dynamics of structures, mechanics of materials related to e.g. climate change, modelling and design of railway systems, multi-scale modelling of pavement materials and structures, reuse of materials, structures and parts of structures, assessment methods for structures, smart monitoring techniques, design methods, replacement and renovation of civil infrastructure and development of new materials and maintenance techniques. Our unique Macro Mechanics Laboratory facilities support full-scale testing, monitoring and modelling of structures to facilitate implementation of innovations. The department delivers both groundbreaking research and world-class education for undergraduate and graduate students. As a team, we represent different backgrounds, skills and views. We foster an inclusive culture, as our combined identities, attitudes and ambitions widen our perspective and make up our strengths.

  • You have a PhD in Structural, Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering, or another relevant subject.
  • You thrive on conducting experimental, numerical and AI-aided research geared to the development of as yet non-existent technologies.
  • You have demonstrated expertise in mechanical testing and validation of experiments at multiple scales through non-linear numerical modelling.
  • You harness your communication skills to inspire and convince partners of your research proposals, and effectively work with industrial partners while expanding our network.
  • You have a proven track record of publications relevant to this research.
  • You are committed to teaching and engaging with students, while growing your own competencies. If you are joining us as an associate professor, you are also dedicated to coaching more junior colleagues and have university teaching experience.
  • You have a good command of spoken and written English, as you will be working in an internationally diverse community and with international partners. To effectively work with Dutch companies and authorities as well, you have some command of Dutch, or are willing to learn the language – for which we will provide support.

This position is offered as an Academic Career Track position (0.8 – 1.0 FTE). During the Academic Career Track, we expect you to grow towards an Associate Professor position within a maximum of eight years, for which a position will be available. With other Academic Career Track colleagues, you will participate in the Academic Career Track Development programme, where you are offered ample opportunities to develop yourself in the areas of Education, Research, Societal Impact & Innovation, and Leadership & Organisation. You will regularly discuss your development and results with senior staff based on a personalized development plan and performance criteria agreed upon at the start of your Academic Career Track. You will start with a temporary contract that will be converted to a permanent contract no later than 12 -18 months after a positive evaluation, based on continuous confidence in your development potential and fit in the organisation.

Inspiring, excellent education is our central aim. We expect you to obtain a University Teaching Qualification (UTQ) within three years if you have less than five years of teaching experience. This is provided by the TU Delft UTQ programme as part of the Academic Career Track Development programme.

TU Delft sets high standards for the English competency of the teaching staff. The TU Delft offers training to improve English competency. If you do not speak Dutch, we offer courses to learn the Dutch language within three years.

The salary for an Academic Career Track (Assistant Professor) position is based on scale 11 of the CAO for Dutch Universities, with a minimum of €4,332 and a maximum of €5,929 gross per month based on a fulltime contract (38 hours).

Are you interested in this position, but feel you have acquired more experience and advanced further in your academic career? Please mention this in your application letter, as in specific cases we may consider an Associate Professor position.

For an Associate Professor position different terms of employment apply. Depending on background and experience, the salary can range from min. € 6,002 to max. €8,025 per month gross based on a fulltime contract. We offer an initial temporary position with the prospect of a permanent contract. The duration of the temporary position is a maximum of 1 year. After a positive performance assessment, you will be employed in a permanent Associate Professor position.

The TU Delft offers a customisable compensation package, discounts on health insurance, and a monthly work costs contribution. Flexible work schedules can be arranged and you can work partly from home.

For international applicants, TU Delft has the Coming to Delft Service . This service addresses the needs of new international employees and those of their partners and families.
