Job description

The Eindhoven University of Technology is a place that combines scientific curiosity with a hands-on mentality. Fundamental knowledge enables us to design solutions for the highly complex problems of today and tomorrow. Our campus is at the center of one of the most powerful technology hubs in the world: Brainport Eindhoven, an area that is about to grow exponentially.

High-Performance Computing  (HPC) is becoming ever more important as a tool in many domains, therefore the TU/e is setting up a new supercomputing service for research and education. This service includes local and cloud solutions but also uses national and international computing facilities.

The position
For the TU/e HPC Lab, we are looking for a proactive, service-minded, and self-driven AI/ML Application Support Engineer who will help us build and professionalize this innovative service. Do you want to rise above yourself, in your profession, and as a person? Do you want to be challenged every day? At the TU/e, scientists and students continuously create the unthinkable. These creative minds expect you to offer them a solution for tomorrow that doesn’t exist today.

You will closely work with researchers, students of all departments, and TU/e institutes as well as with industry partners. You have AI and HPC infrastructure engineering know-how, but your main focus and interest are on the application and workflow side. You will work in a team of highly motivated experts and can help us shape the future of our university, scientists, and students.

The job entails:

  • Assisting researchers and students to efficiently deploy scientific workloads on the various AI/HPC platforms, such as batch computing clusters (local clusters, SURF CPU/GPU clusters) and cloud infrastructure (like Azure and  Rescale).
  • Working with researchers to understand and optimize their application (benchmarking, code optimization).
  • Optimizing application workflow (pre-processing, simulation, post-processing, data storage, etc.) to make the best use of a given platform.
  • Benchmarking and administration/accounting of workloads.
  • Training and communication for end-users.

Job requirements
  • Strong knowledge of Python.
  • Experience with deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch, and TensorFlow is a must.
  • Hands-on experience in optimizing and porting AI/ML code to bigger infrastructures (like a supercomputer) is required.
  • Knowledge of various computer vision algorithms (classification, detection, segmentation) is a pre.
  • Debugging deep learning and in general python code is a must.
  • Basic knowledge of data engineering concepts is valuable.
  • Knowledge of Bash, YAML scripts, Git and Linux is indispensable.
  • Passion to learn, experiment and implement a wide array of AI topics such as LLM’s, Generative AI, reinforcement learning, and Few-shots learning.
  • Nice to have a broad knowledge of MLOps.
  • Experience in writing AI/ML technical articles and data visualization is a plus.
  • Have strong analytical skills and the ability to independently learn and pick up new developments.
  • Be customer-oriented and service-oriented to give substance to the job practically and creatively.
  • Be someone who thrives in a research environment.
  • Be fluent in English. The ability to speak Dutch is an added value.

Conditions of employment

An exciting position within an international yet personal university. You are right in the middle of the students, on a green campus within walking distance of the central station. Besides beautiful architecture, you will find varied workplaces and excellent sports facilities. We also offer you:

  • A monthly salary with a maximum of €5.090,- for full-time employment, depending on your knowledge and experience (scale 10 collective labour agreement for Dutch Universities).
  • In addition to vacation pay, a structural end-of-year bonus of 8.3%.
  • A favorable arrangement for more holidays or a sabbatical.
  • A selection model for additional fringe benefits.
  • Working hours in consultation for an optimal work-life balance.
  • Scope for your talent with advancement prospects and excellent development opportunities  such as mentoring, workshops and coaching.
  • Partially paid parental leave and reimbursement for commuting expenses, working from home and the internet.
  • A generous employer contribution to the favorable ABP pension plan.

Terms & conditions

  • The position comes with the chance to learn and grow in your role and cooperate with other talented people who challenge you every day.
  • A competitive salary depending on knowledge and experience;
  • An extensive package of fringe benefits (e.g. excellent technical infrastructure, excellent sports facilities).
