Offer Description
About us
The University of Luxembourg is an international research university with a distinctly multilingual and interdisciplinary character.
The Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust (SnT) at the University of Luxembourg is a leading international research and innovation centre in secure, reliable and trustworthy ICT systems and services.
We play an instrumental role in Europe by fueling innovation through research partnerships with industry, boosting R&D investments leading to economic growth, and attracting highly qualified talent. We look for researchers from diverse academic backgrounds to contribute to our projects in areas such as: Network Security, Information Assurance, Model-driven Security, Cloud Computing, Cryptography, Satellite Systems, Vehicular Networks, and ICT Services & Applications.
The successful candidate will join the Entrepreneurship, Innovation, and New Technology (EINT) research group, led by Prof. Christian Fisch. EINT conducts interdisciplinary research on entrepreneurship and innovation, with a particular focus on the areas of entrepreneurial finance (e.g., venture capital, business angels, crowdfunding), sustainable entrepreneurship (e.g., climate change, sustainability certifications, impact investing), and entrepreneurship and AI (e.g., AI adoption by entrepreneurs, AI as a method in entrepreneurship research). Across these areas, the group studies novel phenomena using large-scale data and quantitative methods. EINT aims to realize impact through publications in top journals, presentations at leading international conferences, and close collaboration with industry and policy partners.
Your role
The doctoral researcher will prepare a cumulative, paper-based doctoral thesis in entrepreneurship under the supervision of Prof. Christian Fisch, with the goal of publishing in leading international entrepreneurship and management journals.
The thesis topic is open within EINT's research areas. Other topics in entrepreneurship and innovation are also welcome if the applicant has a strong interest and a promising idea.
The thesis should be be quantitative and empirical, normally using large-scale datasets, statistical programming, and econometric methods. Other methods may be used as a complement where clearly justified, but this is not a primarily qualitative research position. Applicants should apply only if they can demonstrate strong quantitative preparation and relevant empirical research experience. A general interest in sustainability, finance, entrepreneurship, or AI without the required methodological background is not sufficient.
The successful candidate will join a team of doctoral and postdoctoral researchers and benefit from EINT's ongoing projects, methodological expertise, and data infrastructure while taking substantial responsibility for developing and executing their own research.
The doctoral researcher's key responsibilities include:
- Developing original, theoretically grounded research questions
- Identifying and constructing appropriate empirical datasets
- Conducting quantitative analyses using reproducible research workflows
- Developing research projects from initial idea through manuscript preparation, revision and submission
- Presenting research at top international conferences and building a professional network in the entrepreneurship research community
- Completing the training program of the Doctoral School in Economics, Finance and Management
Your profile
- A completed or nearly completed Master's degree or equivalent qualification in management, business administration, economics, finance, or a related field
- Advanced university-level training in empirical research methods, statistics, econometrics, or a closely related field
- Practical experience conducting empirical analysis with statistical software such as Stata, R, or Python
- A proactive and independent working style, with strong communication skills and high curiosity
- A genuine interest in developing independent research in entrepreneurship
- Operational Language Requirements: Excellent command in English (C1) is required
In exceptional cases, applicants with a Master's degree in computer science, data science, or a closely related technical field may also be considered. Such candidates must demonstrate a strong interest in entrepreneurship research and explain convincingly how their technical background can be applied to theoretically grounded research questions in sustainable entrepreneurship, entrepreneurial finance, or entrepreneurship and AI.
Academic Eligibility (Thesis):
Applicants must demonstrate at least B2-level proficiency in the language of their thesis. For details and accepted certificates, please visit the Application for admission - Doctoral Candidates .
We offer
- A modern, dynamic university with a personal and inclusive atmosphere. Multilingual and international character. Staff coming from more than 90 countries. Member of The Guild of European Research Intensive Universities
- An exceptional research environment, supported by skilled staff and high-quality equipment. Strong links to professional sectors and the Luxembourg labour market. A unique urban campus with excellent infrastructure
- A partner for society and industry. Cooperation with European institutions, innovative companies, the Financial Centre and a wide range of non-academic partners including ministries, local governments, associations, and NGOs
How to apply
Applications should include:
- Curriculum Vitae
- Cover letter presenting your motivation for this doctoral thesis topic, and explaining how your qualifications and aspirations align with its academic focus
- Transcript of all modules and results from university-level courses taken
- Master's thesis or, if not yet completed, a draft or a comparable piece of independent written work (e.g., a seminar paper)
Early application is highly encouraged, as the applications will be processed upon reception. Please apply ONLINE formally through the HR system. Applications by Email will not be considered.
All qualified individuals are encouraged to apply. In line with our values, the University of Luxembourg promotes an inclusive culture. We encourage applications from individuals of all backgrounds and are dedicated to upholding equality and respect for our employees and students.
