Offer Description

The University | About us...

The MATHCODA Doctoral Training Unit is a doctoral program covering a coherent set of themes around the ideation and study of novel mathematical tools for dealing with high-dimensional and complex data structures, with applications ranging from life sciences to engineering and finance. The main rationale behind our project is the necessity of training a new generation of researchers, possessing a full mastery of the mathematical tools that are needed for modelling and statistically analysing data structures displaying non-standard features, such as high-dimensional components, complicated topological structures, or long-range dependence. The proposed DTU will be led by seven supervisors from Luxembourg University - each of them a scientific leader, specializing in one or more facets of mathematical statistics, probability theory, and their applications. According to our vision, the interaction between the distinct research groups participating in MATHCODA will provide to the doctoral candidates an invaluably rich learning environment, as well as an ideal springboard for their subsequent careers.

The MATHCODA consortium, coordinated by the Mathematics Department (DMATH) of the Faculty of Science, Technology and Medicine (FSTM), in collaboration with FSTM's Department of Engineering (DoE) and the Department of Finance (DF) of the Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance (FDEF), has an opening for:

PhD positions, co-financed by a grant from the Luxembourg National Research Fund.

PhD advisor currently recruiting and his research areas:

  • Yannick Baraud (DMATH): mathematical statistics, robust estimation, variable selection

Your Role...

The successful candidates will be expected to conduct research under the guidance of professors (names and areas of expertise listed above), with the aim of obtaining a PhD in mathematics. They will also be expected to contribute to the department's many activities, including seminars, teaching, outreach and various other research related events.

Our departments offer an outstanding and dynamic environments for PhD candidates, with multiple seminars, working groups, colloquia, and doctoral schools which also grant access to multiple training opportunities, including some not only focused on mathematics.

What we expect from you…

  • Master's Degree (or equivalent) in mathematics or related disciplines. (The degree must be obtained before the beginning of the contract but you can apply before)
  • Good command of written and spoken English
  • Strong dedication to doing mathematics at a research level

How to apply...

Applications should include:

  • Letter of motivation, explaining the reasons for applying to Luxembourg
  • A ranked list of up to three PhD advisors from the above list (with motivations for the choices)
  • Full CV
  • Transcript of academic records and copies of diploma
  • Names of at least two references who are willing to write a letter of recommendation on the candidate's behalf (they may be contacted by us)
  • Any other relevant documents

Early application is highly encouraged, as the applications will be processed upon reception. Please apply ONLINE formally through the HR system. Applications by email will not be considered.

The University of Luxembourg embraces inclusion and diversity as key values. We are fully committed to removing any discriminatory barrier related to gender, and not only, in recruitment and career progression of our staff.
