Commitment & Contract: Collaboration Contract

Location: Center for Translational Neurophysiology of Speech and Communication (CTNSC), Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT), Ferrara - Italy

WHO WE ARE
At IIT we work enthusiastically to develop human-centered Science and Technology to tackle some of the most pressing societal challenges of our times and transfer these technologies to the production system and society. Our Genoa headquarter is strictly inter-connected with our 11 centers around Italy and two outer-stations based in the US for a truly interdisciplinary experience.

YOUR TEAM

You will be working in a multicultural and multi-disciplinary group, where experts in chemistry, material science, physics, biotechnology, physiology, psychology, data analysis and electronic engineering collaborate, each with their own expertise, to carry out common research. The Organic Neuroelectronics Research line is coordinated by Prof. Fabio Biscarini, who has extensive experience in implantable organic (bio-)electronics for signal transduction and sensing. The research focuses on developing organic bioelectronic implantable devices for theranostic purposes. This includes study and fine control of materials’ chemo-physical properties, devices design, fabrication and characterization, as well as validation at the benchside, in vitro and in vivo. In the PNRR BLBC Project, where this position is opened, the IIT team will manufacture device capable to collect small electrical signals in wet environment with high signal-to noise ratio and fine spatial localization. This will be achieved by endowing recording sites with conductive polymeric coating. The final aim will be the development of novel paradigms for electrophysiological mapping of brain lesion borders.

Within the team, your main responsibilities will be:

  • Design organic electronic devices for transduction of electrophysiological signals that exhibit high signal-to-noise ratio even in typically noisy operating contexts (co-presence of other monitoring and/or stimulation systems);
  • Participate in the optimization of fabrication techniques of such devices in order to achieve complete reproducibility in their morphological and functional figures of merit.

This open position/research is financed by the Italian Ministry of Health within the PNRR-POC-2022-12376380 project.

 WHAT WOULD MAKE YOU SHINE

  • A MSc degree covering the fundamental aspects of bioelectronics, materials and surface science and/or device physics and engineering, including Biotechnologies, and similar disciplines
  •  Documented experience on the development and validation of bioelectronic devices, preferably organic ones, encompassing layout design and fabrication, materials and device characterization
  • The ability to properly report and organize research data
  • Good command in spoken and written English

EXTRA AWESOME

  • Organic (bio)electronics, laser patterning, scanning probe microscopies, additive thin-film manufacturing, electrochemistry and semiconductor parameter analysis
  • Knowledge of CAD interfaces, Source Measure Unit operations, time series-analyses, advanced data analysis of large datasets
  • Good communication skills
  • Strong problem solving attitude
  • High motivation to learn
  • Spirit of innovation and creativity
  • Good in time and priority management
  • Ability to work in a challenging and international environment
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a highly interdisciplinary environment

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

  • Competitive salary for international standards
  • Private health care coverage (depending on your role and contract)
  • Wide range of staff discounts
