Offer Description
Bacterial infections of the genital tract cause significant economic losses in the equine industry. In this scenario, Extended-Spectrum β-Lactamase-producing Enterobacteria (ESBL-E) represent a serious public health concern. This project aims to: (i) phenotypically and genotypically characterize the main antibiotic resistance profiles of Enterobacteria isolated from the pathologic reproductive system in mare; (ii) develop potential alternative antimicrobial agents. Furthermore, since the selective pressure exerted by antibiotics is responsible for the high genetic diversity among ESBL-E strains, another aim is to compare the effect of different antibiotic treatments on fecal shedding and genetic diversity of ESBL-E strains. Characterizing these bacteria is crucial both from an epidemiological perspective and for developing new management and prevention strategies
