Applications are invited for a Temporary 24 months post of a UCD Postdoctoral Research Fellow Level 1 within UCD College of Business

Applications are invited for a 24 month-long fixed term postdoctoral appointments in the sociology of markets and healthcare. Successful candidates will be members of an ERC funded research team for a project entitled 'Misfires and Market Innovation: Toward a Collaborative Turn in Organising Markets.

The project refocuses the issues of market failures and market design from economic principles of supply and demand towards collaboration and participation. It investigates problems and concerns in biomedical markets, such as overpricing, limited access to medicines and data privacy issues, and aims to establish how alternative markets or market instruments could be conceived to solve these problems. The project asks how market failures in biomedical markets are diagnosed and voiced, and how government bodies, medical and pharmaceutical industries, patient groups and other actors can work together to address these misfires. The overall objective of the project is to guide new academic and policy thinking by establishing what research can do to make markets more inclusive and to open them up to the concerns of those who feel let down by them. ERC Consolidator grants are awarded under the 'excellent science pillar' of Horizon 2020, the European Union's research and innovation programme. This project has received funding from the European Research Council (ERC) under the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme (grant agreement No 771217).

This is an academic research role where you will conduct a specified programme of research supported by research training and development under the supervision and direction of a Principal Investigator. The primary purpose of the role is to further develop your research skills and competences, including the processes of publication in peer-reviewed academic publications, the development of funding proposals, the mentorship of graduate students along with the opportunity to develop your skills in research led teaching.

The successful candidate will carry out fieldwork in markets for complementary and alternative medicines, focusing on patient entrepreneurship in these markets, using digital, ethnographic, archival or participatory research methods. The specific case will be chosen in conjunction with the Principal Investigator. Conceptually this project will be situated at the crossroads between market studies, the sociology of health and illness, and feminist STS approaches.
