Applications are invited for a temporary post of a UCD Post-doctoral Research Fellow Level 1 within School of History.

The School of History, University College Dublin, is inviting applications for one postdoctoral fellowship on ‘Drug use, Medicine and Irish Society since c. 1960’.

The successful candidate will join the ERC Starting Grant “DIASPORA” Research Group led by Dr Alice Mauger (see Project Details below). The successful candidate will have completed a PhD thesis on a subject directly relevant to the postdoctoral project, which will explore the evolution of official, medical and lay responses to drug use in Ireland since the 1960s. Applications are especially welcome from scholars with a background in the social history of drugs and/or addiction, history of medicine, and/or contemporary Irish social history.

This is an academic research role, where you will conduct a specified programme of research supported by research training and development under the supervision and direction of a Principal Investigator.

The primary purpose of the role is to further develop your research skills and competences, including the processes of publication in peer-reviewed academic publications, the development of funding proposals, the mentorship of graduate students along with the opportunity to develop your skills in research led teaching.

Duties will include disseminating research at seminars, workshops and conferences in Ireland and internationally, publishing single-authored and co-authored outputs including articles and/or book chapters and a peer-reviewed monograph, and co-organising, with the Principal Investigator, a project workshop on representations and accounts of alcohol, drugs and ethnicity in a global perspective.

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the research environment at the School of History and the UCD Centre for the History of Medicine in Ireland and assist with promoting the wider research project via websites and social media.

Fixed Salary: €39,522 per annum

Appointment on the above range will be dependent upon qualifications and experience.
