Lameness is one of the major production diseases affecting dairy cattle, resulting in reduced animal welfare, farm profitability and sustainability. One of the most important factors in the control of lameness and improving animal welfare is the prompt detection and treatment of cases. This post-doctoral research role will utilise machine leaning methods to develop an automated system for the detection of animals that require farmer/vet intervention for the treatment of lameness. Working in collaboration with UCD School of Veterinary Medicine, UCD School of Mathematics and Statistics and Teagasc Moorepark, the successful applicant will work on an existing dataset of accelerometery data, video capture of animals during a lameness scoring process and thermal image data, along with detailed veterinary examination records of the feet of 500 dairy cows.

This is a research focused role, where you will conduct a specified programme of research supported by research training and development under the supervision and direction of a Principal Investigator.

The primary purpose of the role is to further develop your research skills and competences, including the processes of publication in peer-reviewed academic publications, the development of funding proposals, the mentorship of graduate students along with the opportunity to develop your skills in research led teaching.

Salary: €39,522 - €40,083 per annum

Appointment on the above range will be dependent upon qualifications and experience.
