UCD Post-doctoral Research Fellow Level 1 or 2

The School of History, University College Dublin, is inviting applications for one postdoctoral fellowship examining ‘State and Religious Responses to Alcohol, Drug Use and the Irish in London and New York since c. 1945’.

The successful candidate will join the ERC Starting Grant “DIASPORA” Research Group led by Dr Alice Mauger (see Project Details below). The successful candidate will have completed a PhD thesis on a subject directly relevant to the postdoctoral project. The project will explore the changing role of religious participation in migrant welfare in relation to alcohol and drug use, and trace tensions between religious and state bodies grappling with the “problems” associated with high emigration rates in the Irish. Applications are especially welcome from scholars with a background in the history of welfare and/or medicine, and/or contemporary British, American and/or Irish social history. Experience working with relevant source material is highly desirable.

This is an academic research role, where you will conduct a specified programme of research supported by research training and development under the supervision and direction of a Principal Investigator.

The primary purpose of the role is to further develop your research skills and competences, including the processes of publication in peer-reviewed academic publications, the development of funding proposals, the mentorship of graduate students along with the opportunity to develop your skills in research led teaching.

Duties will include disseminating research at seminars, workshops and conferences in Ireland and internationally, publishing single-authored and co-authored outputs including articles and/or book chapter and a single-authored, peer-reviewed monograph, and co-organising, with the Principal Investigator, a project workshop on religious and welfare responses to alcohol and drug use among ethnic minorities and migrant populations.

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the research environment at the School of History and the UCD Centre for the History of Medicine in Ireland and assist with promoting the wider research project via public engagement.

PD1: Fixed Salary: €39,522 per annum or PD2: Fixed Salary: €46,906 per annum

Appointment on the above range will be dependent upon qualifications and experience.
