Typhoid, Cockles, and Terrorism – the turbulent history of typhoid control in revolutionary Dublin uncovers the intimate connection between imperial and public health politics in 20th century Ireland. Based in Dublin and Oxford, our AHRC-IRC-sponsored project explores the impact and limits of sanitary and microbiological interventions and is particularly interested in how ideas about gender, class, and race shaped disease control.

The successful candidate for this postdoctoral position will be based at UCD School of History in Ireland where they will work together with the Irish Principal Investigator (PI) Dr. Claas Kirchhelle (Assistant Professor in the History of Medicine, people.ucd.ie/claas.kirchhelle ). At UCD, the candidate will conduct research on the history of typhoid control and work with the international Typhoidland consortium to deliver a major hybrid exhibition at the Royal College of Physicians in Ireland (RCPI) and Dublin City Library and Archives (launch 2023). The candidate will also be expected to design and carry out related public engagement activities (e.g.ublicc lectures, school engagement, and exhibition tours).

In addition to their work at UCD, the successful candidate will also collaborate intensively with and receive mentorship and career development advice from the project’s UK co-PI, Dr. Samantha Vanderslott (University Research Lecturer, Oxford Vaccine Group, University of Oxford, www.paediatrics.ox.ac.uk/team/samantha-vanderslott ).
