BOF-96 Senior Researcher II - Team Leader Edge AI

Contract: Full Time/ Fixed Term (1 year)

The Wireless Sensor Network Group (WSN) at the Tyndall National Institute, University College Cork is currently advertising for the position of "Senior Researcher II" to lead a research team focused on the development of Advanced (edge) AI for implementation in a variety of application domains such as industry 4.0 (smart manufacturing), agri-tech and environmental monitoring, and wearable systems for health and wellness.

The Tyndall National Institute, at University College Cork, is a world leader in the development of disruptive smart sensor systems for use in-the-body, on-the-body, and around-the-body. Working closely with a global range of academic, business, and clinical partners, our world class technology is being developed in conjunction with several multinational corporations and is approaching market readiness in a number of areas.

As a result of funding secured under significant commercial and government investment in the area of wearable sensing systems for healthcare applications, the Wireless Sensor Network Group, Tyndall National Institute - University College Cork, invites applications for an appointment as a Senior Researcher to drive and manage a multidisciplinary research team in edge AI (on resource constrained hardware, in the cloud and on the interface between these).

Reporting to the WSN Head of Group or their nominee, this is an exciting opportunity to help define and implement advanced research projects in the disruptive, fast-moving, industrially relevant area of Edge AI, Data Analytics and Machine learning for smart sensing systems.

Working with the Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) Head of Group and aligned research teams across Tyndall and UCC, the successful candidate will lead and manage a team of multi-disciplinary researchers with expertise in the development machine learning, artificial Intelligence (cloud and edge), and data analytics for sensor systems in multiple application domains (health care, environmental monitoring, and smart manufacturing).

The team leader will define and implement a research roadmap for edge AI for the Wireless Sensors Group and the Tyndall National Institute.

Activities will include research definition, funding acquisition, and implementation of funded research programs resulting in highly cited high impact journal papers, white papers in relevant research areas, and development of an ERC aligned research program in edge AI.

The role requires travel to international conferences, workshops, industry meetings, proposal project meetings, to strategically position Tyndall WSN as a world-leading advanced research group in wearable systems.

The successful candidate will need to show high levels of initiative, self-management, achievement-orientation, and motivation as well as a proven ability to resource and manage a multidisciplinary research team in an exciting and fast-moving research area.

Key Responsibilities

  • To develop and lead a program of advanced research in the area of Artificial Intelligence (on the edge)
  • Establish Tyndall's position internationally as a world leader in Artificial Intelligence
  • Work with Tyndall's industry/research partners to identify their needs in terms of Machine Learning, Data analytics and implementation of Artificial Intelligence in next generation ICT
  • The candidate will be required to define, resource, lead and implement disruptive research projects in the system specification, design and deployment of AI in multiple application domains, including Industry4.0, health and wellness, and agri-tech and environmental monitoring application areas
  • To conduct and lead the following research activities, including planning, funding, recruitment, organising, conducting, and communicating research studies within the overall scope of applied research projects.
  • To coordinate and perform a variety of independent and team activities involved in the collection, analysis, documentation, and interpretation of information/results.
  • Identifies research challenges and opportunities within their team's area of expertise
  • To engage in appropriate training and professional development opportunities in order to develop appropriate research and leadership skills and competencies
  • Publish and presents influential papers and/or books or equivalent outputs in highly cited journals and conferences
  • Serve on workshop and conference steering/organization committees and delivers invited conference talks
  • To carry out administrative and project management work to support the program of research and ensure all project deliverables and milestones are achieved in a timely manner.
  • To engage in management and mentoring of team members research activities and their personal development
  • To disseminate project outputs, through the interpretation of results and the preparation of manuscripts for publication, including where appropriate public engagement and outreach activities.
  • Participate in Education and Public Engagement activities.
  • Ensure all activities are compliant with the Tyndall Quality Management system.
  • Ensure all activities are compliant with the required Health and Safety standards.
  • Carry out any additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post.

Essential Criteria

  • A post-graduate (PHD) degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science or related discipline
  • Typically > 8 years' experience in relevant research and development activities
  • Has an active and growing international reputation based on research excellence in their field
  • A proven ability to independently define and implement on research projects and carry them out from initial requirements to final preproduction prototype stage
  • Experience with Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and Data analytics algorithm development, integration, and verification
  • Has successfully supervised/co-supervised post-graduate students to completion
  • Can demonstrate a strategic vision of the future of their research field
  • Proven capability to secure the financial viability of a research team through successfully funded proposals in a relevant area

Desirable Criteria

  • Evidence of creative skills/creativity
  • Experience in embedded systems hardware and software design and development
  • Experience in standards-based wireless and embedded system protocols
  • Proven project management skills including scheduling, budgeting, and delivery of defined milestones and deliverables
  • Has shown a capability to make a substantial contribution to their research field or spanning multiple areas
  • A demonstrated capability in the delivery of advanced research projects
  • Can form research consortia and secure research funding / budgets / resources from research councils or industry
  • Has established collaborative relationships with relevant industry research or development groups with demonstrable knowledge transfer
  • Capability of effectively leading and managing teams to deliver innovative solutions
  • Excellent communication skills.

Appointment may be made on the Grade 6a Admin II Scale (B) € 67,046- € 84,927. In all instances the successful appointment will be at the first point of the scale.
