Senior Research Co-ordinator, Quality Lead CUH/UCC Cancer Centre

Updated: 16 days ago
Location: University College Cork, MUNSTER
Deadline: 12 Apr 2024

24 months, Fixed-Term, Whole-Time Post

Cork University Hospital is one of 9 designated National Cancer Control Programme (NCCP) Cancer Centres. It has a large and thriving range of services, and uniquely in Ireland supports the care of both adults and children and all cancer types. It has the latest in diagnostic imaging, including PSMA PET CT, a state-of-the-art radiotherapy unit, and one of the busiest histopathology laboratories in the state. The Cancer Centre at CUH works with valued colleagues across the HSE in the community and other hospitals and serves a wider population of approximately 1.1 million. CUH also houses an Oncology Clinical Trials Unit (Cancer Trials Cork) and the HRB-funded Clinical Research Facility-UCC, and it is an established provider of academic teaching and education.

Our vision is to develop even further, and to bring the Cancer Centre to the level of an internationally recognised Cancer Institute, integrating all aspects of cancer prevention and clinical care with innovative research, education and training. As an initial step to achieving this goal, CUH in collaboration with University College Cork have become members of The Organisation of European Cancer Institutes (OECI) and have begun the process to become a fully accredited Cancer Centre. This process and accreditation is a guarantor of excellence in clinical care, research, clinical trials and education, and will enable close cooperation with peer institutions and major teaching hospitals across Europe, with the ultimate goal of improving patient care.

The OECI quality assessment programme outlines a pathway to excellence using established standards and a peer review system. Uniquely, it is the only cancer accreditation that evaluates research, education, and training alongside clinical care.  In this context, OECI accreditation presents a unique opportunity to contribute to the development of an Academic Health Science System by closely aligning cancer clinical care with its UCC partners in education, research, informatics and innovation to improve all outcomes for cancer patients. Building close partnerships between researchers and health professionals is a key requirement of OECI to enable new scientific discoveries to be translated more quickly into patient treatments and improved outcomes.
