Location: Dublin Harbour, LEINSTER
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 23 May 2023

Applications are invited for a temporary post of a School Research Support Officer within UCD School of Veterinary Medicine.

University College Dublin is a research-intensive university with global standing and impact, and a member of the prestigious Universitas-21 network. The UCD School of Veterinary Medicine has been located on the main Belfield campus since 2002 and is the only veterinary educational establishment on the island of Ireland. Within the School, there are approximately 100 academic staff (full time equivalents [FTEs], including clinical interns and residents) across a broad range of disciplines, 95 support staff (FTEs) and 25 research staff (FTEs). Initially founded as the Veterinary College of Ireland in 1901, UCD School of Veterinary Medicine is in the top 50 World QS rankings for its discipline. The School is of particular strategic importance in protecting Ireland's animal health and welfare status.

The School has a number of senior researchers and numerous areas of research excellence, including One Health, translational research, veterinary epidemiology and national disease control, and veterinary clinical studies. During 2021-22, the UCD School of Veterinary Medicine attracted 4.9 million in new external research funding, and published 224 journal articles, with a field-weighted citation impact (during 2016-20) of 1.62, compared to a world average of 1.0.

Within the School, research support is overseen by the Associate Dean for Research, Innovation & Impact and the Research Committee. Guided by strategic planning conducted in 2018 and 2022, a range of initiatives have been developed and/or refined, with particular emphasis on support for earlier career researchers and for scientists working within a clinical setting. The UCD School of Veterinary Medicine aspires to expand clinical research, with the establishment of a Clinical Research Board, to develop linkages with the UCD Clinical Research Centre in the School of Medicine, to employ a Clinical Research Veterinary Nurse, and introduce a new clinical PhD programme as part of the Irish Clinical Academic Training (ICAT-2) programme.

The School wishes to build on progress to date with the appointment of a School Research Support Officer who will provide tailored support to assist researchers within the School to achieve their research ambitions. The role will complement and add to existing School research supports. This is an exciting, hands-on and delivery-focused role in which the Officer will be afforded significant responsibility to establish and manage research support services for researchers within the School. S/he is expected to be a self-starter, well organised and highly adaptive, and to develop a detailed understanding of relevant UCD infrastructure and processes and a familiarity with relevant funding environments. The Officer will develop relationships with multiple stakeholders and contribute to the network of research support available in other Schools in the UCD College of Health and Agricultural Sciences, and more broadly within the University.

The Officer will provide both pre- and post-award support. For the pre-award phase, the Officer will identify appropriate funding calls, and work directly with researchers in a tailored manner in support of the development of competitive research proposals. In particular, s/he will primarily provide input into non-scientific aspects of the grant application, relating to management (project management, resourcing, budget allocation) and impact. For the post-award phase, the Officer will facilitate initial negotiations to aid project mobilisation, including completion of required agreements (legal, data transfer, consortium etc). The Officer will also provide feedback to support strategic planning by the School Research Committee. In all aspects of this role, the Officer will prioritise those researchers within the School with limited research experience, including earlier career scientists and scientists working within a clinical setting.
