The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at RCSI is one of the most research-active Departments in the University, being the headquarters for the original Perinatal Ireland research consortium, as well as the HRB Mother and Baby Clinical Trials Research Network. The Department has a number of very active clinical researchers, with ongoing HRB-funded, industry-funded and EU-funded research programmes, as well as a core team of research staff and statistical / administrative support. The Department aims to significantly increase its research grant funding by means of competitive grant funding applications, as well as attracting the best talent for clinical research in obstetrics and gynaecology. Based primarily at the Rotunda Hospital Dublin, the Department also has research activities in the other Dublin maternity hospitals.

Specifically, the duties of the post are:

  • Support the strategic research development of the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology.
  • Oversee and deliver on the strategic and operational plans and manage the team to achieve its strategic direction, aims and objectives.
  • Setting-up and monitoring researcher studies to ensure deadlines and objectives are being achieved.
  • Maintaining and enhancing the profile and reputation of the Department’s research by stimulating and supporting participation in appropriate clinical research studies.
  • Ensuring that appropriate procedures for risk management are in place and plans for their mitigation to RCSI and Rotunda Hospital.
  • Managing and reporting on programme and project plans and deliverable relating to the operation and research activities, including tracking and reporting of Programme deliverable and milestones.
  • Preparing an annual report to funding bodies and other reports as required.
  • Identifying potential sources of additional researcher funding and providing support in developing grant applications.
  • Administering and reporting on budgetary issues, liaising with the RCSI Finance Department in relation to all financial matters.
  • Organising and providing administrative support for Programme and project meetings, including governance meetings.
  • Influence and work collaboratively with key stakeholders within RCSI, the Rotunda Hospital, funding bodies and other external bodies.
  • Actively engage and proactively communicate with appropriate committees, boards, fora and networks within RCSI and Rotunda Hospital.
  • Cultivate and promote a positive working environment in which staff and research can thrive.
  • Provide regular and timely feedback to encourage and motivate staff as well as developmental feedback where areas of improvement are noted.
  • Promote a culture of empowerment where staff are encourage to make decisions appropriate to their role, level and experience.
  • Ensuring that research resources are utilised effectively, are within approved budgetary parameters and are compliant with both RCSI and external auditing policies and procedures.
  • Ensuring that all RCSI and Rotunda Hospital clinical and research governance SOPs, policies and procedures are adhered to.
  • Representing the best interests of RCSI at all times.
  • Performing such other duties as may be required from time to time.
