Position Summary
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Research Assistant with experience in packaging analyses, microbiological assessment, and physicochemical analysis of foods to support and conduct research on the development of novel sustainable food packaging. The aim of this SFI-funded project is to develop biodegradable packaging materials that exhibit biodegradable properties and barrier qualities comparable to those of plastics.
The successful candidate will be required to determine biodegradation, migration, antimicrobial activity of the developed packaging films, mechanical and barrier properties characterisation and perform shelf-life analysis during storage of selected food products packaged using the developed packaging films.
Qualifying candidates should possess a minimum qualification of a BSc in Food Science, Food Microbiology, Food Engineering or Material Sciences or related field and would benefit if they had previous experience in packaging research and microbiological analysis. Applications should prove competency in English language where relevant.
The candidate must possess excellent communication, planning, organisation, team working, practical, problem solving, and record-keeping skills. Experience in physicochemical and microbiological analysis of food products is essential. Experience in antimicrobial activity analysis, is highly desirable.
The candidate is required to work collaboratively with both UCC and TU Dublin as per the requirements that arise during the project.

Post Duration: 1 Year
Salary: €30,025 - €39,908 p.a. (IUA Salary Scale)
