Research Assistant, School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences / Environmental Research Institute

Updated: 13 days ago
Location: University College Cork, MUNSTER
Deadline: 19 Apr 2024

7 months, Fixed-Term, Whole-time Post

Position Summary

The School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences (BEES) is recruiting an enthusiastic and creative Research Assistant to join the ITEN project -a project which builds on the success of the UCC Open Arboretum Project and the SFI-funded Tree Explorers projects. The UCC Arboretum is accredited internationally and consists of over 2,500 trees across 42 acres. Working with our partners, the ‘Irish Tree Explorers Network’ (ITEN) project makes use of tree collections across Ireland to engage the public with STEM topics. As part of the project, the successful applicant will assist in the further development and delivery of a range of outreach activities aimed at diverse audiences. Engaging audiences with such living scientific collections has been shown to have significantly positive effects on educational attainment, mental and physical health, attitudes and knowledge of STEM subjects and careers, as well as willingness to engage in dealing with global challenges such as climate change and biodiversity loss. Having a biological/horticultural qualification is desirable. As well as having a biological/horticultural qualification, prospective candidates should demonstrate an ability to contribute to the writing and publishing in peer-reviewed literature.
