Background & Role

Student Support & Development (SS&D) provides professional, academic, and personal support and development opportunities to students at DCU. It is a busy and diverse Unit, which includes the Student Advice Centre, Counselling &; Personal Development, the Student Health Centre, the Disability & Learning Support Office, the Access Office, and the Inter Faith Centre. SS&D is currently seeking a part-time (three days a week) research assistant to work on the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) project.

 

Role Profile

The successful individual will support the DCU Project Lead in developing and implementing RPL across the University. The primary role involves conducting research relevant to the project with staff, learners and employers. The role also involves communicating project developments within DCU and monitoring RPL queries from potential learners. The post holder will report to the RPL Project Lead and is expected to attend mandatory training, supervision, and relevant RPL meetings.

 

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

 

  • Assisting in the promotion and implementation of RPL in DCU
  • Carrying out research related to the RPL project
  • Monitoring RPL queries and making relevant referrals
  • Supporting the development of a DCU RPL web page
  • Assisting the delivery of an RPL communication plan
  • Other tasks relevant to successfully implementing the RPL project

Minimum Criteria

Individuals should have a minimum of a primary degree (NFQ Level 8). In addition, it is desirable that the candidate has a minimum of three years relevant work experience within higher education or a similar environment.

 

Candidates will be assessed on the following competencies:

 

Discipline knowledge and Research skills – Demonstrates knowledge of a research discipline and the ability to conduct a specific programme of research within that discipline

 

Understanding the Research Environment – Demonstrates an awareness of the research environment (for example funding bodies) and the ability to contribute to grant applications

 

Communicating Research – Demonstrates the ability to communicate their research with their peers and the wider research community (for example presenting at conferences and publishing research in relevant journals) and the potential to teach and tutor students

 

Managing & Leadership skills - Demonstrates the potential to manage a research project including the supervision of undergraduate students

Essential Training 

The postholder will be required to undertake the following essential compliance training:

Orientation, Health & Safety, Data Protection (GDPR) and all Cyber Security Awareness Training. Other training may need to be undertaken when required.

 

Salary Scale: IUA Research Assistant Salary Scale - €30,025 - €39,908

 

*Appointment will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and in line with current IUA pay policy

Pilot Remote Working Policy

DCU is currently operating a pilot remote working policy for staff which consists of 1 day a week and 2 days a week for a period of up to 21 weeks per year. Such weeks are determined by the Head of each Unit in conjunction with HR and will take cognisance of the academic calendar, business needs and the service provision of the particular area. The terms of the pilot remote working policy will apply.
