Offer Description

Reference no - 017081
The Darwin Tree of Life Project (DToL) aims to decipher the genomes of all 70,000 eukaryote species in Ireland and Britain. DToL draws together a wide range of partners from museums, botanical gardens, research organisations and universities to collect, sequence and explore the genomes of all animals, plants, fungi and protists in Britain and Ireland. These reference genomes will be publicly available for the global scientific community and will lead to significant follow-on studies in population genetics, various `omics, ecology, evolution studies, biodiversity management and conservation, and climate change effects.
In collaboration with UCD's BatLab and the Tree of Life programme at the Wellcome Sanger Institute, we are looking for a `Research Assistant' to further the collection of species from Ireland for the DToL project. The individual hired will coordinate with Irish collectors, academic, professional and from the engaged public, to acquire samples and then ship these on to Sanger for genomic sequencing following established DToL operating procedures.
Specifically, the individual will be involved in establishing a network of expert partners, based on the DToL target species list. They will coordinate collection events in Ireland, ensuring that specific experts will be in attendance to identify species and assuring ethical sampling, correct metadata recording and secure preservation of samples. The individual will establish and implement robust sample management processes with guidance from UCD and Sanger, including biological and collections metadata management, including information sufficient for the DToL project and Sanger to assure that the samples have been obtained ethically and legally. The individual will coordinate shipments within Ireland and between UCD and Sanger. The individual will promote the project through talks and presentations and through social media engagement in collaboration with the UCD, Sanger and DToL social engagement teams.
Salary range: €30,025 - €35,429 per annum
Appointment on the above range will be dependent upon qualifications and experience.
Closing date: 17:00hrs (local Irish time) on 22nd March 2024
Applications must be submitted by the closing date and time specified. Any applications which are still in progress at the closing time of 17:00hrs (Local Irish Time) on the specified closing date will be cancelled automatically by the system. UCD are unable to accept late applications.
