Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a full-time fixed term (9 month contract) position as a Research Assistant with the Data Science Institute at the University of Galway, Ireland.
This position is funded by the Health Service Executive and is available from April 1st 2024 to the contract end date of December 31st 2024.
The SafePlan app, was developed and tested with the input of clinicians through an iterative design process. The app’s core function is to provide an interactive safety plan to support users with suicidal thoughts or behaviors as an adjunct to face-to-face therapy. For information on the SafePlan app, see:

Job Description:
The successful candidate will support the work of the SafePlan app development project, be part of a multidisciplinary team, and will have excellent software skills in JavaScript and mobile app development.
Duties:
The successful candidate is expected to:
- Lead version control and update managements for Android and iOS version of SafePlan, under the supervision of the Principal Investigator.
- Add features to support automated data collection from phone devices (Android and iOS).
- Create Web site and associated links for SafePlan wider group.
- Facilitate additional requirements planning workshop with Clinicians and capture new specifications.
- Implement new specifications on a prioritised basis.
- Support publication of research outputs
- Any other duties assigned commensurate to the role of Research Assistant.
Qualifications/Skills required:
Essential Requirements:
- Primary degree in Computer Science or related discipline
- Excellent mobile software development and programming skills, in particular JavaScript and mobile app development
- Demonstrable evidence of app development skills (i.e. capstone project report or similar document)
- Web development skills
- Excellent communication and writing skills
- Excellent organisational and inter-personnel skills
Desirable Requirements:
- Skills in React Native
- Experience working on software to support healthcare
- Experience in working in academic-industry partnerships
Salary: Research Assistant salary scale €30,025 – €39,908 per annum, (subject to the project’s funding limitations), and pro rata for shorter and/or part-time contracts.
The default position for all new public sector appointments is the 1st point of the salary scale. This may be reviewed, and consideration afforded to appointment at a higher point on the payscale (subject to the project’s funding limitations), where evidence of prior years’ equivalent experience is accepted in determining placement on the scale above point 1, subject to the maximum of the scale.
