Offer Description
Applications are invited for a temporary post of a Research Assistant within UCD School of Agriculture and Food Science.
A Research Assistant is required to support research activity in the field of dairy systems research. Post quota abolition, grass-based dairy production systems will predominate in Ireland, but as land will be the main
limiting resource, individual farmers will be required to expand on a limited land bank. The main aim of the research at UCD Lyons Farm is to develop a blueprint for sustainable high output grass-based spring milk production systems. The focus in such a system will be on maximising milk/milk solids output from the existing land holding which involves high output from individual cows within permitted stocking rates. This will occur most efficiently through maximising the use of grazed grass/home grown forage in the system and the strategic use of supplementation thereafter.
Duties include forage and feed sample collection, preparation and analysis, animal husbandry, daily checking and handling, heat detection and assistance with breeding, participating in research, milk sampling faecal sampling. Candidates will have a suitable degree and some research or analytical experience would be beneficial. The successful candidate will be involved in grassland management, sample collection, such as milk, rumen fluid, faecal and herbage sampling, sample preparation/storage, including drying (herbage), freezing (rumen fluid) or refrigeration (faeces) and subsequent analysis, involvement in research on methane emissions. The candidate will be expected to help present research outcomes to visiting groups.
The position is based at UCD Lyons Farm and the successful candidate will join a growing and dynamic team investigating solutions to environmental challenges facing dairy production systems.
Research Assistant Salary Scale: €30,025 - €39,908 per annum.
Appointment on the above range will be dependent upon qualifications and experience.
Closing date: 17:00hrs (local Irish time) on 6th March 2024.
Applications must be submitted by the closing date and time specified. Any applications which are still in progress at the closing time of 17:00hrs (Local Irish Time) on the specified closing date will be cancelled automatically by the system. UCD are unable to accept late applications.
