Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a full-time, fixed term position of Postdoctoral Researcher in Anatomy with the School of Medicine, College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences at the University of Galway. 

This position is funded under the Disruptive Technologies Innovation Fund (DTIF) Round 3 which is a €500 million fund established under the National Development Plan (NDP).   

The position is available immediately to contract end date of August 31st 2025 (18 months).  

 

Job Description:  

The Postdoctoral Researcher will perform research tasks for the Vascusense DTIF project in Anatomy and the Duffy lab and liaise with partners in the University of Galway, TU Dublin, Versono Medical and Integer to develop a state-of-the-art integrated device to treat patients with critical limb ischemia with the aim of reducing pain, improving blood flow and preserving the limb. 

The Postdoctoral Researcher will be based in the Duffy lab in the School of Medicine at the University of Galway.  

Duties: 

  • Analysing patient scans of critical limb ischemia using micro-CT and mimics software 
  • Build chronic total occlusion (CTO) analogues using various biomaterials and tissues including 3D printing of patient specific calcific components. 
  • Testing of devices with the CTO analogues  
  • Any other duties assigned commensurate to this level of post 

 

Qualifications/Skills required:   

Essential Requirements: 

  • PhD in Anatomy/Medicine or related discipline  
  • Minimum 2 years research or industrial experience 
  • Evidence of strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills 
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes and to respond appropriately to rapidly changing deadlines 
  • Flexible, self-motivated; ability to work independently and collaboratively 
  • Expertise in micro computed-tomography (CT) imaging 
  • Extensive experience in developing novel micro CT imaging protocols 
  • Extensive experience in micro CT imaging analysis - segmentation and volumetric analysis of human tissue 
  • Experience using Mimics Research software (Materialise) 
  • Experience in additive manufacturing  

Desirable Requirements:  

  • Experienced in 2D and 3D Cell culture 
  • Experience in histology including tissue processing, microtomy and staining techniques 
  • Experience in basic light, confocal microscopy and other advanced microscopy techniques is desirable 
  • Track record in coordinating collaborative projects 
  • Peer reviewed publications 

 

Salary: Postdoctoral Researcher salary scale €42,782 - €54,965 per annum, (subject to the project’s funding limitations), and pro rata for shorter and/or part-time contracts.   

The default position for all new public sector appointments is the 1st point of the salary scale. This may be reviewed, and consideration afforded to appointment at a higher point on the payscale (subject to the project’s funding limitations), where evidence of prior years’ equivalent experience is accepted in determining placement on the scale above point 1, subject to the maximum of the scale.
