Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a full-time, fixed-term position at the level of Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Galway. The successful candidate will be part of a team on a Marine Institute funded project entitled “Monitoring the Attitudes of Society Towards our Seas (MASTS)”. The main objective of the MASTS project is to examine the Irish public’s attitudes towards the seas and oceans around the Irish coast and help develop solutions on a range of marine related issues it is important these resources and how they might be utilised.

 

This position is available from March 2024 and is of 3 years duration.

 

Job Description:

The successful candidate will work in a team under the supervision of Professors Stephen Hynes and Dr Patricia McHugh. The MASTS project will first create a framework for the medium to long-term assessment of values, activities and social benefits that Irish society gain from proximity and access to our marine resources. The project will then use the framework to design and carry out two surveys at a national level, and one at a local level, that can be used for assessing change in societal attitudes to marine related issues. The results will feed into the monitoring approach of the National Marine Planning Framework. The successful candidate will contribute to all aspects of the project but in particular will assist with the development of the survey instrument and the analysis of the responses.

 

Duties:

  • Undertake and prepare literature review to formulate a clear understanding of previous studies on marine related attitudes and values
  • Develop survey instrument to assess Irish public’s attitudes towards the seas and oceans around the Irish coast
  • Carry out analysis of returned surveys using appropriate quantitative techniques
  • Contribute to the writing of reports and research papers for publication in top-level outlets in the fields of marine economics/marketing
  • Actively participate in new funding opportunities, such as the development and writing of proposals
  • Liaise with stakeholders in the local, national and international ecosystem relating to scaling and strengthen those relationships
  • Attend national and international meetings and conferences
  • Support the hosting of events, seminars, and workshops related to the project and SEMRU
  • Contribute to the management and reporting requirements of the project.
  • Any other duties assigned commensurate to this level of post

 

Essential Requirements:

  • PhD (completed or close to completion) in Economics, Marketing or other related disciplines
  • Record of publication in relevant disciplines
  • Evidence of excellent research skills, including of quantitative research approaches
  • Evidence of excellent communications skills
  • Strong coordination, project management and teamwork skills
  • Be a motivated self-starter, as well as being focused and exacting in work ethic.

 

Desirable Requirements:

  • Experience with advanced quantitative analysis techniques
  • Good record of participation in the academic community
  • Good knowledge exchange skills targeting non-academic audiences
  • Experience with content creation for professional social media and websites

 

Salary Scale: Postdoctoral Researcher salary scale €42,782 - €54,965 per annum, (subject to the project’s funding limitations), and pro rata for shorter and/or part-time contracts. 

 

The default position for all new public sector appointments is the 1st point of the salary scale. This may be reviewed, and consideration afforded to appointment at a higher point on the payscale (subject to the project’s funding limitations), where evidence of prior years’ equivalent experience is accepted in determining placement on the scale above point 1, subject to the maximum of the scale.
