Background & Role

The DCU Centre for Climate and Society aims to provide cutting edge research, innovation, and engagement on the societal dimensions of climate change by bringing together DCU’s significant expertise in the humanities, social sciences and related disciplines as they relate to climate change. The Centre is the first climate change research centre in Ireland with a core focus on humanities and social sciences perspectives. It comprises a diverse and multidisciplinary research community of over 30 faculty members and 15 PhD students across three DCU faculties.The Centre is co-lead of the social sciences platform of Climate+, a major new six-year research centre focused on climate, biodiversity, and water and co-funded by Science Foundation Ireland, the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs of Northern Ireland, and UK Research and Innovation.

The postdoctoral researcher will join the new Climate + Biodiversity and Water Co-Centre, a major tri-jurisdictional (Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, Great Britain) research centre focused on the interlinked challenges of climate change, biodiversity, and water quality. The postdoctoral researcher will contribute to a project led by DCU entitled “Analysing public understanding of climate**, biodiversity and water quality risks and responses”.** This project will examine the media consumed (and produced) by rural, farming, coastal, and fishing communities in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.

 

Principle Duties and Responsibilities

Reporting to the Funded Investigator, the successful candidate will undertake a range of research and associated tasks across the Climate+ projects. The main duties and responsibilities include:

  • Undertaking comprehensive literature reviews and synthesising existing research across multiple fields of relevance to the projects.
  • Undertaking primary data collection and analysis, including but not limited to document analysis, interviews, social media data analysis, focus group work.
  • Participating in project meetings and working with partners across the project consortia.
  • Presenting research findings at relevant national and international conferences.
  • Engaging with relevant stakeholders and overseeing outreach to different audiences.
  • Overseeing the timely completion of project deliverables.
  • Contributing to the efficient management of the project, including through relevant administrative tasks.

Minimum Criteria

Applicants should have a PhD in PhD in Environmental Communications or a cognate discipline*.*  In addition, it is desirable that the candidate has;

  • A strong research profile on the environmental communications.
  • An emerging track record of peer reviewed academic publications.
  • Excellent empirical research, analytical, and writing skills.
  • Proven ability to work in an interdisciplinary setting.
  • Strong interpersonal and organisational skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively to both academic and practitioner audiences.
  • Knowledge of the Irish media landscape.

 

Candidates will be assessed on the following competencies:

  • Discipline knowledge and Research skills – Demonstrates knowledge of a research discipline and the ability to conduct a specific programme of research within that discipline.
  • Understanding the Research Environment – Demonstrates an awareness of the research environment (for example funding bodies) and the ability to contribute to grant applications.
  • Communicating Research – Demonstrates the ability to communicate their research with their peers and the wider research community (for example presenting at conferences and publishing research in relevant journals) and the potential to teach and tutor students.
  • Managing & Leadership skills - Demonstrates the potential to manage a research project including the supervision of undergraduate students.

 

Essential Training 

The postholder will be required to undertake the following essential compliance training: Orientation, Health & Safety, Data Protection (GDPR) and all Cyber Security Awareness Training. Other training may need to be undertaken when required.

 

Salary Scale:

IUA Postdoctoral Researcher Salary Scale - €42,783- €54,965

Appointment will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and in line with current Government pay policy.
