Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a full-time fixed-term position as a Postdoctoral Researcher with the Centre for Chromosome Biology at the University of Galway, Ireland.

 

This position is funded by Science Foundation Ireland and is available in the first instance for 12 months from May 2024 subject to funding.

Job Description:

The successful candidate will be experienced in cell culturist who will extend our understanding of the canonical and non-canonical functions of the ATR (Ataxia telangiectasia and Rad3-related) protein. While the canonical function of ATR is regulation of DNA replication stress responses, non-canonical functions in chromosome segregations, cytokinetic abscission and mechano-biology are emerging. The post is available in the first instance for 12 months.

 

Main Duties:

  • Conduct a specified programme of research and scholarship under the supervision and direction of the Principal Investigator.
  • Provide intellectual input to the research.
  • Plan, co-ordinate and implement research project (this may include managing a small research team/co-ordinating other researcher activity).
  • Keep up to date with research related methods and techniques, in particular, developments in the specific research area.
  • Demonstrate a systematic understanding of a field of study.
  • Demonstrate the ability to manage a research project.
  • Determine appropriate methodologies for research, with advice and support as appropriate.
  • Supervise junior undergraduate and postgraduate researchers in the laboratory.
  • May act as co-supervisor or be a member of a supervision panel.
  • Collaborate with colleagues on areas of shared research interest.
  • Contribute to the research project’s dissemination in whatever form, e.g. reports, papers, book chapters.
  • Effectively communicate their research with their peers.
  • Gain experience in grant writing.
  • Possibility to participate in limited teaching hours for the candidate’s own development, so long as the extent of teaching does not adversely impact the primary research role.
  • To have knowledge and understanding of the policy, practices and procedures, relevant to the role (e.g. Commercial Awareness, Research Ethics, Knowledge Transfer, Patents, Intellectual Property Rights, Health and Safety, Equal Opportunities & Diversity).
  • Any other duties assigned commensurate to this level of post.

 

Qualifications/Skills required:

 

Essential Qualifications and requirements:

  • PhD in relevant Discipline (e.g. Biochemistry, Genetics, Molecular Biology)
  • High motivation for research (provide evidence for research leadership)
  • Evidence of excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Experienced cell culturist and molecular biologist
  • Experience of research and completion of a research project
  • Effective written and oral skills
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Publication record in suitable peer-reviewed journals

 

Desirable Requirements:

  • Knowledge of mechanisms required for genome stability (e.g. cell cycle control, DNA replication, DNA repair).
  • Prior experience with microscopy
  • Prior experience with genome editing (e.g. CRISPR/Cas9)
  • Expertise in biochemical analysis.
  • Expertise in genetic analysis.
  • Experience in supervising of students.
  • Experience in writing and publishing research papers
  • Ability to communicate effectively to both academic and general audiences
  • Experience in peer-reviewing manuscripts
  • Some experience of preparing grant applications

 

Salary: Postdoctoral Researcher salary scale is €42,782 - €54,965 per annum (subject to the project’s funding limitations), and pro rata for shorter and/or part-time contracts.

 

The default position for all new public sector appointments is the 1st point of the salary scale. This may be reviewed, and consideration afforded to appointment at a higher point on the payscale (subject to the project’s funding limitations), where evidence of prior years’ equivalent experience is accepted in determining placement on the scale above point 1, subject to the maximum of the scale.
