Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a full-time, fixed term position as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Galway, Ireland.

This position is available from 01.06.2024 to contract end date of 30.05.2026.

The project aimsto use omics data and metabolic modelling to explore and ultimately improvefunctional coupling along the diet-microbiome-host axis. A particular emphasis will be on exploring in silico different feed additives that could improve the health of the host by modulating the microbial composition. Therefore, novel computational approaches that are tractable and versatile will be developed. The project involves various European partners.

Job Description:

The successful candidate will develop computational modelling tools and perform omics-based computational modelling analyses to improve our understanding of microbes, diet additives, and host-microbiome interactions.

Duties:  

·         Develop computational metabolic modelling methods to investigate the host-microbiome co-metabolism and the role of feed additives.

  • Reconstruct and maintain the microbiome reconstruction compendium.
  • Perform computational modelling of microbiome metabolism.
  • Analyse omics-data in the context of the microbiome.
  • Contribute to writing of scientific papers, progress reports, and grant applications.
  • Contribute to supervision of student research projects.
  • Any other duties assigned commensurate to this level of post.

 

Qualifications/Skills required:

Essential Requirements:

·         PhD degree in Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Systems Biology, or related fields.

·         Demonstrable experience in biocomputational modelling.

·         Demonstrable knowledge of software development.

·         Excellent communication skills are required.

·         Excellent working knowledge of English is required.

·         High motivation and interest in interdisciplinary work is required.

 

Desirable Requirements:

·         Experience with the constraint-based modelling approach is desired.

·         Software development skills in Matlab is of advantage.

  • Working knowledge of statistical methods and tools is of advantage.
  • Experience with proteomic, transcriptomic and metabolomic data is desirable.

·         Demonstrable expertise in genomic data analysis.

  • Programming experience in other languages is of advantage (C++, Perl, R, Python).

Salary: Postdoctoral Researcher salary scale € 42,782 - €54,965 per annum, (subject to the project’s funding limitations), and pro rata for shorter and/or part-time contracts.

The default position for all new public sector appointments is the 1st point of the salary scale. This may be reviewed, and consideration afforded to appointment at a higher point on the payscale (subject to the project’s funding limitations), where evidence of prior years’ equivalent experience is accepted in determining placement on the scale above point 1, subject to the maximum of the scale.
