Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a full-time fixed term position as Postdoctoral Researcher within the School of Medicine at the University of Galway, Ireland and associated with the Centre for Research in Medical Devices (CÚRAM). The project, which runs for three years runs in collaboration with colleagues in the School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences, Industry partner Cerenovus and clinical collaborators across Europe and Asia. 

This position is funded through Science Foundation Ireland (CÚRAM) and is available from April 2024 for 3 years.

Job Description: 

The successful candidate will explore the characteristics of thrombi from acute ischemic stroke patients using a mix of histological and immunohistochemical techniques. Additionally, the role will also involve the management and analysis of the database of clot pathology, exploring the correlation of clot characteristics with clinical characteristics.  

The position will require a suitably experienced biomedical scientist with experience in pathology, excellent histology, immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization and proteomics skills.  

The successful candidate will work as part of a team with collaborators in the School of Medicine, School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences, Cerenovus and collaborating stroke centres internationally. 

Duties:   

  • Compositional and pattern analysis of blood clots retrieved from acute ischemic stroke patients 

  • Establishment of a clinical database of Intracranial Atherosclerotic disease clot histopathology in collaboration with stroke centres in Asia 

  • Development and establishment of additional protocols and development of capacity for the analysis and characterisation of blood clot samples  

  • Publication of research outcomes in high impact factor journals  

  • Travel: active participation and presentations at international conferences, in-person collaborators meetings and networking events  

  • Data science and statistical analysis 

  • Any other duties assigned commensurate to this level of post 

Qualifications/Skills required:  

Essential Requirements:  

  • Applicants must have a Ph.D. in the Biomedical Sciences or Medical degree (M.B., B.Ch., B.A.O or equivalent) with 4 years full-time relevant research experience after primary degree.    

  • An excellent record of accomplishment in histopathological analysis with experience of histology and immunohistochemistry 

  • High quality first author publications  

  • Excellent statistical analysis skills  

  • Excellent oral presentation skills  

  • Excellent team working, organisational and inter-personal skills 

  • Candidates must be highly motivated 

Desirable Requirements: 

  • Minimum of 6 high quality publications, 3 as first author 

  • Leadership and project management capability 

  • Public patient interaction experience 

  • In situ hybridization experience 

  • Proteomics skills 

Salary: Postdoctoral Researcher salary scale: €42,782 - €54,965 per annum, (subject to the project’s funding limitations), and pro rata for shorter and/or part-time contracts.     

The default position for all new public sector appointments is the 1st point of the salary scale. This may be reviewed, and consideration afforded to appointment at a higher point on the payscale (subject to the project’s funding limitations), where evidence of prior years’ equivalent experience is accepted in determining placement on the scale above point 1, subject to the maximum of the scale.
