Role Overview

This is a key appointment in the Irish Research Council (IRC-COALESCE) funded “Food Waste in Ireland – Assessment, Environmental & Economic Burden, and Mitigation Strategies” (FORWARD) project, that brings together researchers from Technological University Dublin (TU Dublin), University College Cork and Munster Technological University. The central objective of FORWARD is to develop a “waste-to-value” bioeconomy by assessing, quantifying and developing a circular bioeconomy approach to food waste. The primary purpose of this research role is to conduct cross-sectional survey for quantifying food waste in Ireland and conduct Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) and Life Cycle Costing (LCC) of the generated food waste so as to measure its environmental impacts and economic costs. FORWARD focuses on the ‘National Waste Action Plan for a Circular Economy’ to support a ‘Zero Waste’ approach by facilitating an integrated reduce, reuse, recycle approach. It will provide improved evidence-based policy alongside reduced waste creation via accurate estimation of Greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions, water and land use, together with individual and household-scale economic losses per kg of food waste generated. Specifically, the Postdoctoral Researcher will (a) conduct a national survey for quantifying volumes and composition of household food waste generated in Ireland and identify clusters (spatiotemporal, occupational, demographic) of food waste streams and (b) Undertake environmental and economic assessments via Life Cycle Analysis and Life Cycle Costing of generated food waste and equivalent valorisation into value added product(s). Apart from conducting the survey, LCA and LCC, the Postdoctoral Researcher may also be required to assist with public outreach, stakeholder interactions, report writing and supervision of student research-projects.

The work on this Research Programme is carried out by Postdoctoral Research Fellows and is quasi-autonomous research activity. The mentoring Principal Investigator (PI) will advise the appointee on the conduct of their research which itself will be part of a research programme that the PI is responsible for. The intention is that during the employment of the appointee, they will avail of learning opportunities provided by TU Dublin and/or external agencies related to their particular research programme or research practice in general. At the completion of the Postdoctoral Research Fellowship period, the appointee will be expected to leave the University and continue their academic formation and development in a different research environment. At the completion of the mentored training period, the appointee should be in a position to take up employment as a fully autonomous researcher with another employer.
