Offer Description
Applications are invited for a temporary post of a Post-doctoral Research Fellow Level 1 within School of Medicine.
ICAREWOUNDS (Intelligence and integration of care for smarter chronic wounds management) is a research project funded under the THCS Joint Transnational Call (JTC2023) for collaborative research projects on "Healthcare of the Future". The Transforming Health and Care Systems (THCS) initiative has been established as a European partnership under Horizon Europe, co-funded by the European Commission.
The ICAREWOUNDS project will develop an integrated care (IC) model for chronic wound (CW) management. Chronic wounds are a major concern for the healthcare system as their financial burden is estimated at 5% of total expenditure. Moreover, the management of chronic wounds is very complex. The presence of different tissues, healing levels and factors such as the patient's skin type determine the clinical strategy and wound dressings to use. Despite there being great experts on chronic wounds, these are often followed-up by non-expert professionals at primary care. The ability of those professionals to make the most appropriate clinical decisions is limited, which leads to a great variability in the management of chronic wounds and makes recovery harder, longer, and remarkably more costly.
The main aim of the project is to design, deploy, implement, and validate an Integrated Care model that facilitates the sustainability and efficiency of chronic wound management.
ICAREWOUNDS will put the patient at the centre, empower non-expert physicians, enable the communication/collaboration between care levels and prevent the occurrence of adverse events. ICAREWOUNDS model will be based on a CW management platform that will integrate new and existing eHealth and Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence technologies, enabling the capture of data, including wound pictures, the interoperability of data using healthcare standards (FHIR), automatic CW feature extraction by means of deep learning algorithms and the support to non-experts' decision for a personalised patient care. The project will also evaluate the clinical and economic impact in an interventional clinical study.
This is a research focused role, where you will conduct a specified programme of research supported by research training and development under the supervision and direction of a Principal Investigator.
The primary purpose of the role is to further develop your research skills and competences, including the processes of publication in peer-reviewed academic publications, the development of funding proposals, the mentorship of graduate students along with the opportunity to develop your skills in research led teaching
Post Doc Level 1 Fixed Salary: €43,908 per annum
Closing date: 12:00 noon (local Irish time) on the 16th of May 2025
Applications must be submitted by the closing date and time specified. Any applications which are still in progress at the closing time of 12:00 noon (Local Irish Time) on the specified closing date will be cancelled automatically by the system. UCD are unable to accept late applications.
UCD do not require assistance from Recruitment Agencies. Any CV's submitted by Recruitment Agencies will be returned.
The PD1 position is intended for early stage researchers, either just after completion of a PhD or for someone entering a new area for the first time. If you have already completed your PD1 stage in UCD or will soon complete a PD1, or you are an external applicant whose total Postdoctoral experience, inclusive of the duration of the advertised post, would exceed 4 years, you should not apply and should refer to PD2 posts instead.
