Offer Description
Applications are invited for a temporary post of a UCD Post-doctoral Research Fellow Level 1 within UCD School of Computer Science.
NASA is already harnessing the power of blockchain technology through a groundbreaking project named SCRAMBL (Space Communication Reconstruction and Mapping with Blockchain Ledgering). This pioneering initiative utilizes blockchain to effectively manage inter-satellite routing and enable a seamless flow of critical data within satellite constellations. SCRAMBL maintains a ledger containing invaluable information pertinent to the satellite constellation, facilitating cooperative coordination among individual satellite assets to meet system-level objectives. Within this ledger, one can find a comprehensive inventory of established communication pathways, primarily derived from spacecraft-published connection state changes. Furthermore, specialized space-centric algorithms developed within this research initiative prioritize lightweight and efficient execution, tailored for resource-constrained computing components utilized on satellites. Importantly, the network path routing optimizations performed scale adeptly as the constellation expands, dynamically accommodating the addition of late-joining assets. This innovation involves routing data through other satellites within the constellation before reaching its final destination, offering a potent strategy for enhancing network efficiency by alleviating congestion at ground stations. However, it's essential to address a critical aspect that SCRAMBL currently overlooks-the incentives for satellite operators to permit the utilization of their onboard communication capabilities by other operators. Restricting inter-satellite routing solely to nodes operated by the same operator poses a substantial limitation on routing capacity. To foster inter-operator inter-satellite routing and unlock its transformative potential, it becomes imperative to establish positive incentives encouraging operators to share their communication and computing infrastructure. Such collaboration promises substantial cost savings and efficiency improvements, notably reducing satellite-to-ground station communication requirements and significantly enhancing latency.
This project aims to develop a decentralized blockchain-based autonomous communication infrastructure sharing system based on Linux Foundation's open-source Hyperledger Blockchain framework. This system empowers satellite operators to share their onboard communication capacity with fellow operators seeking to route their data through these satellites.
This is a research focused role, where you will conduct a specified programme of research supported by research training and development under the supervision and direction of a Principal Investigator.
The primary purpose of the role is to further develop your research skills and competences, including the processes of publication in peer-reviewed academic publications, the development of funding proposals, the mentorship of graduate students along with the opportunity to develop your skills in research led teaching.
Salary Range: €43.908 - €50,302 per annum
Appointment on the above range will be dependent on qualifications and experience
Closing date: 12:00 noon (local Irish time) on the 31st of May 2024
Applications must be submitted by the closing date and time specified. Any applications which are still in progress at the closing time of 12:00 noon (Local Irish Time) on the specified closing date will be cancelled automatically by the system. UCD are unable to accept late applications.
UCD do not require assistance from Recruitment Agencies. Any CV's submitted by Recruitment Agencies will be returned.
The PD1 position is intended for early stage researchers, either just after completion of a PhD or for someone entering a new area for the first time. If you have already completed your PD1 stage in UCD or will soon complete a PD1, or you are an external applicant whose total Postdoctoral experience, inclusive of the duration of the advertised post, would exceed 4 years, you should not apply and should refer to PD2 posts instead.
