We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Fellow for a 12 month position to work on a collaborative project as part of the CURAM Centre for Research in Medical Devices. The aim of the project is to develop computational models of transcranial ultrasound stimulation of neurons within the deep structures of the brain. The long term aim is the development of new neuromodulation approaches for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, including Parkinson's disease. This project is funded by the CURAM Centre for Research in Medical Devices https://www.universityofgalway.ie/curam/ .
The Neuromuscular Systems and Neural Engineering Lab (https://www.ucd.ie/neuro/ ) is a multidisciplinary research group based in the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at University College Dublin. Our research involves applying engineering principles, in particular mathematical modelling, signal analysis and experimentation, to understand how the nervous system controls movement. Through this research we aim to improve our understanding of the neuromuscular system to address fundamental questions in the control of human movement and to develop improved therapeutic strategies, including next generation neuromodulation technologies. The project in in collaboration with Dr Manus Biggs, National University of Ireland, Galway.
This is a research focused role, where you will conduct a specified programme of research supported by research training and development under the supervision and direction of a Principal Investigator.
The primary purpose of the role is to further develop your research skills and competences, including the processes of publication in peer-reviewed academic publications, the development of funding proposals, the mentorship of graduate students along with the opportunity to develop your skills in research led teaching.
In addition to the Principal Duties and Responsibilities listed below, the successful candidate will also carry out the following duties specific to this project:
* Develop computational models of ultrasound propagation and neural stimulation within the brain.
* Verify the models using experimental methods in vitro.
Salary Range:€42,783 -€49,177 per annum
Appointment on the above range will be dependent upon qualifications and experience.
Closing date: 17:00hrs (local Irish time) on the 20th of March 2024
