A standby panel may be formed from which vacancies for this role may be filled.

 

The successful candidate will have appropriate academic, administrative and supervisory experience to enable the validation of a new degree in Optometry at SETU and the subsequent accreditation with CORU. The appointee will report to the Head of School.

Duties of the Post will include:

  • A leading role in the development, implementation and maintenance of academic quality assurance arrangements associated with the new Optometry programme.
  • Contributing, as appropriate, to the development of the business case for the new programme.
  • Engaging with the appropriate regulatory bodies to develop the new programme.
  • Support the recruitment of staff for the new programme.
  • Ensuring that the new programme is designed in accordance with and aligned to professional body standards
  • Preparing documentation for CORU accreditation
  • Preparing programme and module resources including teaching and learning strategies and resources to support competency assessments and industry placements
  • Advising on and progressing infrastructure requirements for the new programme.
  • Planning and implementing programmes of research and development relevant to the Optometry programme.
  • Participating in appropriate activities, including external activities, necessary to the development and promotion of the new programme, School and the University.
  • Providing academic leadership and scholarship in course development and in course coordination.
  • Maintaining appropriate records and making available information as required by senior management.
  • Developing and strengthening links with relevant educational institutions regionally, nationally and internationally.
  •     Lecturing up to 105 hours annually
  • Carrying out such duties within the University as may, from time to time, be assigned by the Head of the School.

The appointee will carry out the lawful instructions of the President or authorized officer and comply with the requirements and regulations of the Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science

The performance of this work will require regular attendance at the University in addition to class contact hours during the normal working week.

Salary: The Salary scale applicable to this post is  €89,326 - €114,847

Academic Qualifications

 

Appropriate level 8 degree  in Optometry or equivalent from a recognised degree awarding authority and a further qualification of at least Master’s degree/level 9 in Optometry from a recognised degree awarding authority.

PhD or equivalent in subject area(s) relevant to the post. 

Professional Qualifications

 

Registered with the Optical Registration Board or equivalent European/International accreditation body for Optometry education.

Experience

5 years relevant post qualifying (Degree) work experience in practice, industry, research and/or third level education. 

10 years relevant post qualifying (Degree) work experience in practice, industry, research and/or third level education.

Previous programme development/ management experience.

Previous experience with meeting optometry professional body requirements

Extensive research experience in the area of optometry or related field.

Experience of working in a higher education institution.

Experience in cross campus initiatives.

Specific knowledge and skills

 

Knowledge of the regulatory requirements for Optometry education programmes as set down by the Optical Registration Board.

Knowledge of the processes involved in the development, implementation and maintenance of academic quality assurance arrangements.

Experience of leading and managing a multidisciplinary team. 

Knowledge of research funding opportunities.

Evidence of leadership in advancing gender equality.

I.T. Skills

Word Processing and Data Management.

Experience of using education support software such as Moodle.

Specific Personal Qualities

Track record of working in multidisciplinary and diverse project teams.

Excellent communicator.

Demonstrated track record of delivering large scale projects.
