Postdoctoral researcher studying the histopathology of acute ischaemic stroke blood clots and the correlation of composition with impedance measurements

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a full-time fixed term position as Postdoctoral Researcher with CÚRAM at the National University of Ireland, Galway. The project, which runs until the end of December 2024, represents a Science Foundation Ireland facilitated collaboration between NUI Galway with an industrial partner.

Job Description:

The position will require suitably experienced scientists to explore the characteristics of thrombi from acute ischemic stroke patients using a mix of histological and immunohistochemical techniques. Additionally, the role will also involve the establishment of a database of clot pathology, in collaboration with key collaborating clinical centres internationally and the correlation of clot characteristics with clinical characteristics and electrical impedance.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Compositional analysis of blood clots retrieved from acute ischemic stroke patients
• Development and analysis of a clinical database of acute ischemic stroke clot histopathology
• Development and establishment of additional protocols and development of capacity for the analysis and characterisation of blood clot samples
• Publication of research outcomes in high impact factor journals
• Active participation and presentations at international conferences, meetings and networking events
• Grant writing

Essential Criteria:

• Applicants must have a Ph.D. in the Biomedical Sciences or Medical degree (M.B., B.Ch., B.A.O or equivalent)
• A good track record in histopathological analysis with experience of histology and immunohistochemistry is essential
• Good statistical analysis skills are essential
• Excellent scientific writing and oral presentation skills are essential
• Candidates must be highly motivated, work well as part of a team and have excellent verbal communication, organizational and interpersonal skills

Desirable Criteria:

• The ideal candidate should have a track record in blood clot pathology/ stroke research
• Publications in high impact factor journals
• Leadership and project management capability

Salary: €39,523 - €41,940 per annum per annum pro rata for shorter and/or part-time contracts (public sector pay policy rules pertaining to new entrants will apply).

Start date: October 2022
