We are seeking an excellent academic to join our staff as an Assistant Professor / Lecturer / Assistant Lecturer in Physical Geography - Landscape Ecology/Biodiversity. The preferred candidate will have a scientific research background in ecology/environmental geography and will make specific research-informed and science-based teaching contributions in this general area to our Biological and Geographical Sciences BSc degree as well as to wider departmental teaching needs in Geography.
Applicants may have research links across aspects of landscape ecology via, but not limited to, species-area assessments, ecosystem services assessment, biodiversity and climate, environmental impacts on biodiversity, conservation management or Environmental Impact Assessment. Experience in aligning scientific evidence to the UN Sustainable Development Goals and in applying quantitative methods, GIS and/or remote sensing to research in these areas, together with an ability to contribute to teaching quantitative skills in GIS/RS, would be an advantage.
The person appointed will have a proven record of teaching, research and publication, appropriate to career stage. They will be expected to make a strong contribution to the teaching programme of the Department, and to undertake teaching duties on the Department’s undergraduate programmes, including our new MH203 Biological and Geographical Sciences degree programme, as well as postgraduate programmes and the supervision of Master’s and PhD students.
The appointee will be expected to build a strong research profile that supports the University’s research strategy, including affiliating to the Research Institutes (e.g. ICARUS) where appropriate, and working with colleagues on national and international research. The appointee will be expected to sustain and conduct research, engage in scholarship of quality and substance and generate publications of international standard. The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to the further development of ecological/sustainability research within the ICARUS Irish climate analysis and research unit, and will have the opportunity to contribute and collaborate with the national All-Island Climate and Biodiversity Research Network of which ICARUS Director Professor Peter Thorne is a founding member.
Salary
Assistant Professor / Lecturer (Post 1995*): € 55,951 – € 88,601 per annum (7 points)
Assistant Lecturer (2022): € 35,598 – € 62,211 p.a. (14 points)
* Appointments will be made in accordance with public sector pay provisions.
