Post Summary

The Associate Professor /Consultant in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) is an academic post between Trinity College, The Dublin Dental University Hospital and St. James’s Hospital. This academic post will have a role in and contribute to establishing the national OMFS service at St James at the forefront of developments in Irish Healthcare through academic leadership in OMFS and when implemented participation in the Academic Health Science System (AHSS) partnership model.

The post was established in the School of Dental Science, Trinity College Dublin to harness the synergies in education and translation research between OMFS, Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine and Dentistry. The post will support the delivery of the national training programmes in Oral and Maxillofacial surgery, specialist training in Oral Surgery and in Oral Medicine and for educational programmes in the School of Dental Science, and the School of Medicine, Trinity College.

In the Trinity College Dublin (TCD) School of Dental Science (located in the Dublin Dental University Hospital-DDUH), School of Medicine, and Trinity St James’s Cancer Institute the post holder will interact with the range of surgical, medical and dental specialists, in developing and delivering internationally recognised educational programmes, translational research and clinical leadership that address the needs of patients. As such, they will take cognisance of national and European regulations, guidelines and local service needs. Importantly, the post holder functions as a TCD academic, affording them the opportunity to utilise all the resources of a World Top 100 University in forging collaborations, driving innovation and leading impactful research.  There has been significant research in oral pathology, including cancer, in the School of Dental Science and this needs to continue in order to improve outcomes in this debilitating, disfiguring and aggressive cancer.

This post at SJH and School of Dental Science/DDUH, will contribute to the clinical teaching, assessment, research activities and service development in both Hospitals on the basis of the AHSS partnership model. The post-holder will assume leadership and academic roles within the School of Dental Science/DDUH and will demonstrate leadership in academic matters relating to education, translational research, patient care and provide national leadership in the development of cancer services. They will contribute to research within the Discipline and develop an internationally competitive research group with external funding. They will guide clinical research within the framework of the current clinical service structures and the HSE Research Governance Framework (2021) to advance the expertise and treatments/services available to patients and develop high quality evidence based approaches to service delivery. Although the primary academic attachment is with the School of Dental Science, the post-holder will have an additional opportunity within the School of Medicine and the Trinity St James’s Cancer Institute to facilitate research and teaching activities.

The National Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Service is located at St James Hospital, Dublin 8. There are five OMFS Consultants each with a “two site” appointment who provide clinical care to a population of approximately 3 million people, in the Dublin North East, Dublin North Leinster. The National Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Service also acts as a secondary and tertiary referral for Ireland which has a population approximately 5 million. A comprehensive OMFS service is provided in Head and Neck surgical oncology, Maxillofacial-and Craniofacial trauma, Facial deformity, Paediatric OMFS including Cleft Lip and Palate, Surgical Dermatology, and Oral Surgery. There are approximately 300 new Head and Neck Cancer cases diagnosed annually in Ireland of which 170 oral cancers are treated in St James’s by the OMFS service. There are strong links between OMFS and the radiation oncology service in St Luke’s Centre for Radiation Therapy. There is a comprehensive MDT collaboration. St James is a centre of excellence in the management of Oral and Head and Neck Cancer. In addition to contributing to the Head and Neck surgical oncology service the successful candidate will be required to support the trauma service covering St James’s, Beaumont, the Mater Hospital and Crumlin’s Children’s Hospital Ireland. The service manages approximately 1000 facial fractures per year.

Appointment will be made on the Public Only Consultants Contract 2023 as per 7 March 2023 HSE circular 008/2023
