Duties

The appointees will assist the project leader in the interdisciplinary research project – “Strengthening physical literacy for preschoolers”, led by the School of Design with support from the Jockey Club Design Institute for Social Innovation, to conduct user-centered design research, develop/prototype/implement product-spatial intervention strategies, and develop instructional materials to support teaching and research activities.  They will also assume a pivotal role in translating design research and product-spatial interventions into frontline design practices. This encompasses co-designing and facilitating interactive workshops, capacity-building, stakeholder engagement, developing educational toolkits and self-help training manuals, conducting on-site spatial and storage consultations, executing stakeholder engagement programmes externally, processing recording and analysis, and the publication and dissemination of knowledge related to the initiatives. 

They will be required to:

(a)    act as a project manager to assist the project leader in the administration, development, and execution of programmes with stakeholders in Hong Kong. This includes overseeing the entire design process, from initial research and concept development to documentation, spatial interventions, and final project completion (applicable to Senior Research Fellow only);

(b)    lead or assist in conducting theme-based desktop and fieldwork research, user’s patterns mapping, spatial/site observation fieldnotes and related documentation as required by the client and project team to support knowledge transfer and dissemination;

(c)    lead or assist in defining and implementing the product-spatial intervention research methodology for service recipients, encompassing concept exploration, prototyping and tests, preparation of technical documents (including detailed production drawings, construction documents, interior detailing, and procurement), selection of design intervention, as well as installation and quality assurance;

(d)    lead or assist in planning, designing and co-delivering multi-tier participatory design workshops for kindergarten teachers, school leaders and parents across project and network schools, including organising events and collaborating with community stakeholders, and delivering the research and project outcomes;

(e)    co-develop the practical, scalable educational toolkits, including self-help resource toolkits, integrated manuals and storage management visualised guides, and design-thinking activity kits;

(f)    collaborate and communicate effectively with all stakeholders, monitor project progress, develop strategic plans, manage client expectations, and submit reports to the funder to ensure the project remains on track; and

(g)    perform any other duties as assigned by the project leader or delegates.

The appointees may be required to work occasionally outside normal office hours, including weekday evenings, Saturdays and Sundays.

Qualifications

Applicants for the Senior Project Fellow post should have a doctoral degree in Interior or Environmental Design or an equivalent qualification, plus at least ten years of project management experience in conducting interior and furniture design.

Applicants for the Postdoctoral Fellow post should have a doctoral degree in Design Research or an equivalent qualification, and must have no more than five years of post-qualification experience at the time of application.

Applicants should also have:

(a)    proven leadership in product-spatial design research and development; 

(b)    strong expertise in interior and furniture design, production and installation with a good understanding of safety and quality control (for Senior Project Fellow post); 

(c)    an excellent command of both written and spoken English and Chinese, including Cantonese for project coordination and report editing; 

(d)    knowledge of the major industry-standard design software such as Autodesk AutoCAD, Adobe Creative, Microsoft Office, PowerPoint and Excel; and

(e)    the ability to work independently and manage multidisciplinary projects effectively. 

Preference will be given to those who have prior experience or understanding in preschooler education environment, community engagement and contextual study in Hong Kong.

Conditions of Service 

For full-time appointments, a highly competitive remuneration package will be offered.

For part-time appointments, the remuneration rates are HK$630 per hour for the post of Senior Project Fellow and HK$385 per hour for the post of Postdoctoral Fellow.
