The Max-Planck-Institute for Neurobiology of Behaviour – caesar (MPINB) is a neuroethology institute located in Bonn that studies how the collective activity of the vast numbers of interconnected neurons in the brain gives rise to the plethora of animal behaviors. Our research spans a large range of scales from the nano-scale imaging of brain circuitry, to large-scale functional imaging of brain circuitry during behavior, to the quantification of natural animal behaviors.
The Max Planck Research Group Neural Circuits of Dr. Johannes Seelig investigates the dynamics of neural circuits un-derlying behavior in the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster. For this group we are looking for a
Student Assistant
for deep reinforcement learning and robotics
(m/f/div)
Project Description:
We aim to control a custom robotic arm through ROS (Robot Operating System, as described in https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0165027021003678 ). The goal of the project is the automated handling and manipulation of fruit flies. The work requires programming (Python, C++) and familiarity with image processing and deep learning frameworks (such as OpenCV, Tensorflow, Keras, or Pytorch). An interest in real-time image processing, reinforcement learning, and the control of experimental hardware is also required. We offer state of the art computing hardware for deep learning, a custom robotic arm, and an exciting project that will be implemented in close collaboration with a small team.
Education/Experience:
We are looking for a highly motivated student in computer science, physics, engineering or related fields with a background and interest in computer vision, deep learning, and robotics.
Position:
You will work flexible number of hours per week (max. 20 hrs per week) on an robotics project using real time image processing and deep learning. We would like to fill the position as soon as possible. Your salary will be in line with the Max Planck regulations (currently: 10,91 € Bachelor‘s students, 12,68 € Master’s student).
