Master thesis - Regional biomass potential in the global energy system

Updated: about 1 hour ago

Your Job:

Biomass is currently one of the most important renewable energy sources worldwide. Today`s biomass sources range from the cultivation of energy crops to agricultural residues and waste material. However, the question is, which forms and quantities of biomass can be used in the future without jeopardising the food supply of worlds growing population.
The tasks of the master`s thesis are divided into the following three points:

  • 1. You will develop a suitable categorisation of biomass types
  • 2. You will determine explicit biomass potentials for these biomass types
  • 3. You will have the opportunity to apply your approach to model global biomass potentials using an existing energy system model.

Start date: At the next possible date.

Your Profile:

  • Very good academic record and currently enrolled in a Master’s program in engineering, energy technology, environmental sciences, renewable energies, biosciences and geosciences, agricultural sciences or a related field of study
  • You have good written and spoken English skills
  • You are interested in analysing data and processing it in Python
  • You are interested in developing scientific modelling approaches and dealing with complex issues
  • You are highly motivated and able to work independently and analytically
  • You have a high degree of self-organisation and time management skills

Even if you have no previous experience in modelling with Python, we look forward to receiving your application if you are enthusiastic about the topic and willing to familiarise yourself with complex topics in a short time.

Our Offer:

As a Master`s student, you will work in a team of experts with different scientific backgrounds. You will be involved in the development of global transformation pathways to realise a greenhouse gas-neutral energy system. We offer you a high degree of flexibility, insights into the processes of a leading scientific institute and the opportunity to work on highly relevant environmental and energy topics.

Further we offer our students:

  • Collaboration in a diverse, highly motivated and international working group in one of the largest research institutions in Europe
  • An excellent scientific infrastructure and intensive supervision
  • Professional technical equipment for remote work and the opportunity to work 100% from home
  • A reasonable remuneration

In addition to exciting tasks and a collaborative working atmosphere at Jülich, we have a lot more to offer: https://go.fzj.de/benefits

We particularly welcome applications from people from a diverse range of backgrounds (e.g. regardless of age, gender, disabilities, sexual orientation/identity, as well as social, ethnic, and religious background). We strive to offer a diverse and inclusive working environment in which people enjoy equal opportunities and are able to fulfill their potential.
