Job description:

The Optical Technologies for Space Applications group at DLR’s Institute of Communications and Navigation develops experimental laser communication systems for optical data links between airborne carriers such as airplanes or satellites and optical ground stations as well as demonstrator platforms for testbed system verifications. The integrated circuits development covers several disciplines such as photonics, electronics and programming.

The successful applicant will join our team in the development of integrated optical systems for very-high-throughput satellite communications and ranging applications. To address the unique challenge of designing the next generation of integrated transceivers, she/he/they will investigate various photonic devices required in a high-speed transmission link. The main focus of the work is to model and evaluate performance of a selected photonic component and its compatibility with the existing optical communications system.

It is an excellent opportunity to work in a cutting-edge topic, gain experience on working with commercial photonic design tools, and improve your engineering skills.

Main activities:

  • develop photonic components and functional blocks
  • validate device and circuit performance
  • assess operating environment impact on the PIC
  • assist with PIC experimental testing and data analysis
  • program Python/Matlab simulation tools
