Job description:

The department's field of research is optical satellite communication for connections from low and geostationary orbit to the ground and between satellites. The department is also involved in laser-optical aeronautical communication for passenger aircraft, drones etc. These systems can be categorized as classical optical communication. Another important area of research is satellite-based quantum communication. Here, the department is working on solutions to efficiently transmit photonic quantum states between satellites and ground stations.

The "Optical Technologies for Satellite Links" group deals with technologies in application areas of optical free-beam transmission (using laser technology) through the atmosphere and in space. Research topics include studies, development and implementation of signal processing systems for communication as well as for time and frequency transfer. All steps from theory and simulation to channel measurement and experimental demonstration are carried out.

In addition to new possibilities, free-space connections also present new challenges. The light has to travel through turbulences in the atmosphere, which leads to instabilities in the link. The research group is developing technologies that process the signal in real time at the physical layer as well as at the link layer in order to protect the application from signal failures.

Make an active contribution to the development of the next generation of optical communication systems for new satellite systems. Your tasks will include the development of key channel protection algorithms for optical transmission systems in space applications and their implementation on FPGAs, which form the basis of the entire system.
