The Faculty of Arts invites applications for the position of University Lecturer of German for a permanent appointment as of 1 August 2024, or as agreed. The duties of the position include research, teaching and supervision of theses in the field of the German language. Teaching will be provided on both bachelor’s and master’s degree levels.

The duties of the appointee will include research in the field, participation in the acquisition of research funding, the provision of teaching based on research, the supervision and examination of theses, as well as contribution to the planning and development of teaching and other jointly agreed duties in academic administration. The teaching associated with the position will be given in the German study track of the Bachelor’s and Master’s Programmes in Languages, as well as teaching provided collaboratively by the degree programmes for students of all languages. The appointee is expected to be able to teach in German, in addition to which good skills in English are necessary.

With a broad-based approach, the staff of the Study Track in German investigate the German Language from various perspectives of linguistics, literature studies, the study of multilingualism, as well as the cultural relations between Finland and German-speaking Europe. The appointee’s research profile is expected to represent linguistics or applied research on German as a foreign language.

Requirements for the position and assessment of qualifications

According to the Regulations of the University of Helsinki, an appointee to a University Lecturer position shall hold an applicable doctoral degree and have the ability to conduct independent scholarly work as well as to be able to provide high-quality teaching based on research, develop teaching on the basis of research and supervise theses and dissertations.

Pursuant to the Government Decree on Universities (770/2009), appointees to teaching and research positions at the University must be proficient in the language in which they provide instruction, i.e., Finnish or Swedish. To successfully attend to the duties of the position, the appointee must also have good English skills. If the appointee does not speak Finnish, they must acquire proficiency in Finnish sufficient for everyday communication within five years from the beginning of their employment.

When assessing applicants’ qualifications, attention will be paid to both scholarly and teaching merits. Scholarly qualifications include scholarly publications and other research results of scholarly value. Teaching qualifications include teaching experience and pedagogical training, the ability to produce learning materials, other teaching merits and, if necessary, a teaching demonstration.

What we offer

The salary for the position will be based on levels 5-6(-7) of the job requirement scheme for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal performance. The gross annual salary is €42,000–€56,000.
There will be a six-month trial period for the position.
