Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 09 Jun 2022

Together, Tampere University and Tampere University of Applied Sciences form a higher education community that places faith in people and scientific knowledge. Leading experts in the fields of technology, health and society are changing the world at Finland’s second largest multidisciplinary higher education institution. www.tuni.fi/en
Materials science and engineering are keys to enabling technologies when our society is transitioning from fuel-intensive era towards material-intensive era. Lightweight, durable, and environmentally friendly materials play a critical role in our aims for sustainable low-carbon and resource-efficient society. The ever increasing environmental and economic requirements demand for visionary innovations, pioneering solutions, and revolutionary breakthroughs in the processing, characterization, and bottom-up design of materials to improve their performance and durability in extreme conditions.
The Engineering Materials Science research at the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences focuses on experimental and numerical characterization of material properties and behavior from the nanoscale up to macroscopic structures as well as developing advanced processing and manufacturing methods with the aim of improving the ultimate performance and lifetime of materials in demanding operational environments. We develop lightweight energy-saving material solutions, added value coatings and surface treatments, biobased multi-material solutions, and experimental-numerical solutions for evaluating the mechanical performance of materials. We have active collaboration with local and international industry and research organizations.
Job description
We are seeking highly motivated and accomplished candidates in the broad area of Engineering Materials Science for conducting high-level scientific and technological research with high societal impact. Your research in the field of Engineering Materials Science may focus on, for example,

  • improving material performance using coating technology, other additive manufacturing technology and surface treatments, focusing on the microstructures, properties and performance of inorganic materials, prevention of corrosion and wear, materials for electrochemical applications including battery materials and functional coatings, or
  • experiments, diagnostics, and numerical evaluation of material behaviour, performance, and interactions in dry and lubricated tribological contacts such as fretting, fatigue, wear, and surface fatigue phenomena.

Whilst you may have background in a research or industrial applications, you are expected to develop your own scientific research profile. Similarly, you are expected to develop strong networks, also/especially with industries, to promote the societal impact of your research. Your research should strengthen and be complementary to our present research in Engineering Materials Science research and the faculty   and to address recent and emerging scientific and societal grand challenges such as sustainability in industrial applications.

If successful, you will be placed at the level of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor or Professor, based on your experience and expertise. While in the early stages of your career the focus is on research, in time you will be expected to contribute increasingly to teaching, curriculum development, and graduate and post-graduate student supervision.

Requirements
You should have a doctoral degree in materials science, mechanical engineering, chemistry, or a related field. You should also have experience in scientific or technological research in academia or in practice. Further requirements for each tenure track level are as follows:
Assistant Professor
We require:

  • ability to undertake independent scholarly activity and potential to pursue scholarly activity at a high international level of excellence
  • teaching skills required to successfully perform the duties and functions of the position.

Associate Professor
We require:

  • track record of independent scholarly activity on a high international level
  • teaching skills required to successfully perform the duties and functions of the position
  • ability to lead a research group and acquire external funding.

Professor
We require:

  • high-level scholarly or artistic expertise
  • experience of leading scientific research activities
  • ability to provide high-quality research-based education and instruction
  • track record of winning external research funding
  • track record of international scholarly activity

We offer
We are inviting you to be a part of a vibrant, active and truly international research community.  The multidisciplinary research environment offers opportunities to develop research expertise via collaboration, e.g., with different fields of engineering and natural sciences.  We are offering an advanced research infrastructure in many research fields of materials science and engineering, and a new research hub building is being planned.
Initial appointment as Assistant Professor / Associate Professor is for five years, subject to successful performance, you will become a tenured faculty member after the first five-year period. A trial period of six months applies to all our new employees.
Salaries are based on the job demands and employees’ personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. A typical starting salary for an Assistant Professor is approximately 4200-4400 EUR/month and for an Associate Professor approximately 4800-5000 EUR/month and for a Professor approximately 5800-6100 EUR/month. Higher salaries may be negotiated for candidates with exceptional experience and/or performance.
We offer a wide range of staff benefits, such as occupational health care, flexible working hours, excellent sports facilities on campus and several restaurants and cafés on campus with staff discounts. Please read more about working at Tampere University.
The city of Tampere is one of the major academic hubs in the Nordic countries and offers a dynamic living environment.  Finland provides one of the most advanced and comprehensive social security systems in the world. It includes for example sickness benefits, various family benefits and a comprehensive healthcare system.
