The Institute for Molecular Medicine Finland (FIMM) is an international research unit focusing on human genomics and personalised medicine at the Helsinki Institute of Life Science (HiLIFE) of the University of Helsinki - a leading Nordic university with a strong commitment to life science research. As part of Academic Medical Center Helsinki in Meilahti campus FIMM collaborates locally with the Faculty of Medicine, Helsinki University Hospital and National Institute for Health and Welfare. FIMM is part of the Nordic EMBL Partnership for Molecular Medicine, composed of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and the centres for molecular medicine in Norway, Sweden and Denmark, and the EU-LIFE Community.

FIMM is currently seeking a Scientific cloud administrator 

We are looking for an enthusiastic scientific system administrator to join us at the Institute for Molecular Medicine Finland (FIMM). FIMM is a biomedical research institute and a leading domestic sequencing and genotyping services provider. FIMM employs nearly 300 researchers and scientific support personnel in an international and inclusive environment. The majority of our staff have a degree in biology, biochemistry, bioinformatics, or medicine. As a scientific cloud administrator, you will support and improve FIMM’s secure data analysis environment used by FIMM’s researchers. The analysis environment is hosted in the Google Cloud and fulfills domestic and EU-level data protection requirements for sensitive human data. You will gain a deep understanding of the Google Cloud Platform (GCP), FIMM’s secure data analysis environment, and its users. You will be in direct contact with the research scientists to help them to use the environment while gathering valuable feedback to implement further improvements. FIMM’s data analysis environment is based on a similar environment used by the FinnGen project. You will work closely with your colleagues at both FIMM and FinnGen to support and further improve these two environments.

We invite applications from researchers and scientifically minded individuals with prior computational experience and are attracted by the prospect of supporting and improving a modern public cloud-based data analysis environment.

Essential qualifications and skills include:

  • relevant higher-level education (master’s degree or Ph.D. in life sciences or information technology) or equivalent skills (e.g. bachelor's degree with strong relevant experience)
  • good team working and communication skills (working language is English)
  • prior computational experience
  • interest in becoming Google Cloud Platform (GCP) certified

An ideal candidate:

  • Is educated or experienced in the life science domain, preferably in genomics and genetics
  • Has good computing skills including knowledge of the Linux operating system and scripting languages (e.g. Python)
  • Is motivated to support science and learning IT technologies  (e.g. IAM, IaC, containers)          
  • Has created scientific data analysis workflows
  • Understands the principles of  container technologies
  • Has experience in agile development 
  • Has worked in a public cloud environment

Contract period, salary and benefits

The salary will be in accordance with the University salary (YPJ) system on previous qualifications, experience, and performance in the position. The contract will be initially offered until the end of 31.12.2025 with a possibility of extension. A trial period of 6 months will be applied.
