Professor / Associate or Assistant Professor (Tenure Track) in Geology and Mineralogy

The Department of Geosciences and Geography, in the Faculty of Science, invites applications for a

PROFESSOR / ASSISTANT or ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR (TENURE TRACK) IN GEOLOGY AND MINERALOGY

The position may be filled either as a permanent Professorship or as a fixed-term Assistant or Associate Professorship (tenure track), depending on the qualifications and career stage of the selected candidate. Further information about the University of Helsinki tenure track system is available on the university's website .

Job Description

The purpose of the professorship is to complement the department's research and teaching activities and to promote development of the appointee’s research area in close collaboration with the research groups in environmental and high temperature geochemistry, critical mineral systems and with the Institute of Seismology.

The successful applicant is expected to build a research group and to lead international collaborative projects within their field. Suitable research focus areas include, but are not limited to, spatial and temporal aspects of igneous and hydrothermal processes and water- and melt-rock reactions applicable to Precambrian bedrock. The candidate is expected to establish active research collaborations with national and international research institutions as well as the industry and the public sector. The candidate is expected to utilize and further develop the department’s HelLabs infrastructure .

The appointee will participate in teaching and supervision at all levels within the department and will develop study materials focused on mineralogy and petrology with a particular emphasis on Finnish bedrock geology within the BSc Programme in Geosciences and MSc Programme in Geology and Geophysics. Responsibilities include teaching in Finnish in the BSs programme in Geosciences and in English in the MSc Programme in Geology and Geophysics.

Selection Criteria

To be successful in the position, the applicant shall develop/have a strong collaborative international network, and a demonstrated ability to conduct research on an internationally high level as well as take advantage of national and international research funding opportunities. The appointee will participate in teaching and supervision at all levels in the department and develop study materials focused on mineralogy and petrology with a particular emphasis on Finnish bedrock geology within the BSc Programme in Geosciences and MSc Programme in Geology and Geophysics. Hence, expertise in these topics and proven teaching experience will be considered advantageous.

Candidates appointed as Assistant or Associate Professors must hold a doctoral degree and demonstrate the ability to conduct independent scholarly work as well as possess the teaching skills required for the position. They must also demonstrate, through publications and other achievements, both the ability and motivation for an academic career, along with the ability or potential to obtain external research funding and lead broad-based research activities.

Candidates appointed as Professors must hold a doctoral degree and demonstrate outstanding academic qualifications, experience in leading scientific research, the ability to provide high-quality research-based teaching and supervise theses, and evidence of international collaboration within their field.

The position requires excellent Finnish language skills (C1/C2) and excellent English language skills (B2/C1).

Position Information

The position is full-time and the work location is in Helsinki, Finland.

The preliminary starting salary for Assistant/Associate Professors is typically approximately €5,600-6,500 per month, and for professors, approximately €6,800-7,400 per month. The salary is based on the appointee’s qualifications and experience and can be higher than indicated in exceptional cases.

At the start of the appointment, it is also possible to discuss potential start-up funding to support the launch of research activities.

The position includes a six-month probationary period at the start of the employment contract.
