The University of Helsinki, founded in 1640, is one of the best multidisciplinary research universities in the world. The University has four doctoral schools, which offer a total of 32 doctoral programmes. Doctoral students in the Doctoral Programme in Law is an employee at the Faculty of Law, but can carry out research in any field in law. The Doctoral Programme in Law is part of the Doctoral School in Humanities and Social Sciences (HYMY).

The Faculty of Law invites applications for

DOCTORAL CANDIDATE POSITION

for a 4 year period starting from January 1 2021.

We are looking for a doctoral student whose project can be completed as part of the ANIWERE research project (www.helsinki.fi/aniwere ). The purpose of the project is to analyse the current legal status of animals: they are things which may not be afflicted with unnecessary suffering. The approach of the project is theoretical, but this approach may be supplemented by for instance doctrinal and comparative viewpoints.

It may also be possible to start the employment earlier or have a shorter than 4 year employment for this position.

The duties of a doctoral candidate are to work on their doctoral thesis and to complete the doctoral studies determined by the doctoral programme’s curriculum. The duties may also include teaching and other tasks for up to 5 % of the annual working time.

APPLICATION CRITERIA

The appointee must hold a study right in Law doctoral programme at the University of Helsinki. If the doctoral candidate does not yet have a study right at the University of Helsinki, the appointee must obtain the right to pursue a doctoral degree at the University of Helsinki within six months of the start of the appointment. https://www.helsinki.fi/en/research/doctoral-education/doctoral-schools-...

Other requirements include the ability and motivation, as demonstrated through previous degree studies or otherwise, to pursue the doctoral degree according to the research proposal and the accompanying study plan.

In selection of the doctoral students will be taken into consideration the quality of the research proposal, the topic of research and its impact as well as its feasibility for the sector or project in question, realism of the study plan as well as previous academic performance of the applicants during their earlier studies and time in which the studies were completed.

  • the supervisor's statement ensuring that the dissertation can be completed during the mentioned employment period
  • study plan, based on the study requirements and courses of the Faculty of Law (max 2 pages): study plan should include timetable and information on possible previous tasks and funding for this research project

The salary for the doctoral candidate position is based on levels 2–4 of the job requirement scheme for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee shall be paid a salary component based on personal work performance. Depending on the appointee’s qualifications and experience, the salary is EUR 2350–3059 per month. A six-month trial period will be applied.
