Two or more PhD Stipends in Energy Modelling, Spatial Planning, Heat Planning and Model Coupling

Updated: 10 months ago
Deadline: 26 Jun 2023

The PhD positions are in the Sustainable Energy Planning Research group and are designed to support our focus within energy modelling, spatial planning, heat planning and model coupling, where we have a number of research projects supporting the work.

The PhD positions could be within areas such as:

European energy system modelling and spatial planning combining the use of energy system simulation models with spatial planning tools using European data, e.g., data on NUTS2 regions, to identify renewable transition of different energy sectors. A special focus is on the transition of the heating sector and heat demand mapping, where the work builds on previous research projects, namely Heat Roadmap Europe 4 and Hotmaps.

The use of the energy systems simulation tool EnergyPLAN as well as ArcGIS or similar would be a cornerstone in the Ph.D. work, thus experience with this is a pivotal strength for applications to this position.

Energy systems modelling of EU countries with the aim of identifying long-term decarbonisation strategies while focusing on the system design and specifically focusing on the phase-out of natural gas in the heating sectors using heat savings, district heating as well as individual heat pumps and electrification of industry and transport. The use of the energy systems simulation tool EnergyPLAN is a crucial part of the position as well as motivation for understanding the dynamics and possibilities to improve our transition to a climate neutral energy system in relation to REPowerEU and the Paris Agreement.

Energy system model developments and the linking of energy system models to other planning tools. The work revolves around EnergyPLAN and developing data handling methods to better link to other tools, such as both Life Cycle Assessments, Local Data on cities and other planning and energy analysis tools. A special focus is given to the development of algorithms and data handling that increases the usability of energy system analysis tools.

The use of the energy systems simulation tool EnergyPLAN is a crucial part of the position, which also requires experience with programming and data handling, as well as development of algorithms for energy system analysis.

The candidates for these positions should preferably have a MSc degree within engineering in e.g., spatial planning, energy planning, energy system modelling, energy system analysis or similar areas. Additionally, Danish language skills and experiences with problem-based learning are advantages.

You may obtain further information from Jakob Zinck Thellufsen,+45 9940 [email protected] concerning the scientific aspects of the stipend.

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master's degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Technical Doctoral School of IT and Design in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed at regular points in time.

Shortlisting will be applied. This means that subsequent to the deadline for applications the head of department supported by the chair of the assessment committee will select candidates for assessment. All applicants will be informed whether they will be assessed or not.

For further information about stipends and salary as well as practical issues concerning the application procedure contact Lisbeth Diinhoff, The Technical Faculty of IT and Design, email:[email protected] , phone:+45 9940 9589.
