Job Description

Are you interested in research and shellfish aquaculture production? We have a state-of-the-art hatchery and recently been awarded some major projects where commercial and restoration production of European flat oysters is a key component. 

We are looking for a skilled and experienced shellfish hatchery technician who for the next 2 years will be responsible of the day-to-day tasks in the hatchery and fulfil our ambitious goals for production of flat oysters. We have many years of experience in hatching flat oysters in a smaller scale and we are now building new procedures and protocols for upscaling, and you will be part of this pioneering effort.

The job
You will take care of the flat oyster broodstock, larvae and spat. You will manage the environmental and growth monitoring and oyster batch traceability. You will provide data to the research team as an active and engaged participant in research projects in low trophic species in the Section for Coastal Ecology, DTU Aqua. You will be part of a team and will report to both the hatchery scientific and technical managers as well as project leaders.

The job includes several tasks where the primary responsibilities are:

  • Maintenance and conditioning of the broodstock with logbook records.
  • Larvae rearing and husbandry: feeding, counting, size tracking, mortality screening, larvae settlement on different substratum.
  • Nursery production: screening for mortality, counting, cleaning, sorting seeds with traceability.
  • Control and manage water quality and grow out equipment.
  • Cleaning routines of equipment and maintenance
  • Experimental setup: Preparing broodstock, larvae and seeds for experiments, samples for analysis. 
  • Record keeping: Process and report basic monitoring data.
  • Implement sanitary procedures and contribute to the biosecurity plan: conduct sampling, manage and structure data in relation to traceability.
  • Participate in planning, execution and processing of samples/water analysis and monitoring in experiments with shellfish, starfish, macroalgae etc. in the hatchery and in the field.
  • Participate in phytoplankton culture.
  • Rotative on-call duty in weekends and evenings for overall hatchery maintenance of the water system

Our expectations for you
We are looking for a person with an aquaculture technician degree or five years of shellfish hatchery experience and experience with biosecurity measures.

As a hatchery technician at DTU Aqua, you are placed in a key position to support both the researchers and the overall production. You must be able to both maintain the overall overview of the entire project process and be included in the planning with the researchers. There will be rotative weekend work.

  • You are willing to develop competencies to solve new tasks.
  • You have good communication skills and problem-solving abilities.
  • You must be fluent in English.

The job requires a person with knowledge in two or more of the following topics:

  • Marine biology
  • Plankton production
  • Shellfish aquaculture production
  • Sanitary measures for hatchery production in aquaculture

However, your main tasks will be to provide a constant flow of monitoring data, maintenance and well-functioning of the hatchery and support the team. 

Salary and terms of employment
Salary and appointment terms are in accordance with the OAO-S Joint Agreement and the organization agreement for Office Clerks, Laboratory Technicians and IT staff (HK/stat), the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC) or other relevant agreement and will depend on your professional qualifications.

The position is for 2 years. 

The workplace is Nykøbing Mors.

Section for Coastal Ecology conducts research within the ecology of the coastal zone from nutrient dynamics to fish as well as the coastal zone as a fishing ground and production area for low-trophic aquaculture. Our core research areas are aquaculture of low-trophic species i.e. bivalves and seaweed, fisheries and effects of fishery and seaweed collection in the coastal zone, marine habitats, and their importance in the coastal zone for biodiversity and fish. The results of the research are largely translated into practice through advice to public management and the industry. We have a strong national and international collaboration network of universities, research institutions, and industry.
