Job Description

If you want to make changes in the way xenobiotic organic chemicals are assessed, we offer the possibility to pursue this ambition with a team of highly dedicated environmental chemists and ecotoxicologists. At DTU Sustain you will work at the forefront of science providing solutions to major societal challenges related chemicals, circularity, sustainability, and environmental quality.

Your overall focus will be to strengthen DTU Sustain’s competences within the areas of PBT and PMT assessments of chemicals. You will work in our section of Circularity & Environmental Impact dealing with experimental approaches to regulatory relevant testing and assessment of the fate and effects of chemicals and materials of emerging concerns. We want to strengthen our focus on PFAS and other persistent organic compounds as well as precursors to these. Your main collaborators will be with academia, public authorities, consultants, and industrial partners in Denmark as well as abroad.

Responsibilities and qualifications
We expect that you have a strong Danish and/or international platform within both applied science and regulation of chemicals and/or nanomaterials. Your primary tasks will be to:

  • Perform research at an international level in the cross-field of persistency, (eco)toxicology, regulatory science and policy development
  • Develop concepts for screening, identification and regulation of PBT and PMT precursors
  • Interact with authorities at the national and EU level
  • Build up, develop and contribute with new approaches and experimental methods or modeling tools.
  • Contribute to research in the group and with colleagues in the areas of environmental chemistry, ecotoxicology, chemicals regulation, and other related fields

Experience with the use of (Q)SARs and modelling approaches are beneficial but not a must.

Though your main obligations will be within research and scientific consultancy, we offer possibilities to participate in teaching and supervison activities at BSc, MSc student and PhD level.

You must contribute to teaching at the Department. DTU employs two working languages: Danish and English. You are expected to be fluent in at least one of these languages, and in time are expected to master both.

As a formal qualification you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent) as well as academic qualifications equivalent to those obtained by holding a position as a researcher or postdoc. To be appointed as a senior researcher, you must have completed a didactic/pedagogic education. If you do not have the necessary education, then it is possible to complete this requirement within a period of two years of appointment.

You will be assessed against the responsibilities and qualifications stated above and the following general criteria:

  • Research experience
  • Experience in chemicals regulation
  • Experience and quality of teaching
  • Research vision and potential
  • International impact and experience
  • Societal impact

The ongoing “PFAS crisis” has shown how important it is, in due time, to assess the persistence of chemicals. Ten thousands of chemicals are in use but only a small part has been tested for persistence. If you want to contribute to the development and application of better methods for determining biodegradation kinetics and persistence of chemicals, then DTU Sustain offers you the opportunity to work on the technical and scientific challenges in chemical persistence research.
