Job Description

Simulating, handling and analysing state of the art x-ray data for ultrafast processes in novel battery materials
The Ultrafast group at the 4DMAP section at DTU Physics seeks a Research Engineer / Senior Research Engineer to join our team on the project of capturing ultrafast electron and ion dynamics in batteries (UltraBat).
The job
The work will be focused on the development and application of molecular simulation methods, forward modelling of experimental X-ray data, and the conjunction of these two fields towards novel methods for model and structure refinement. This role will also encompass support of students and colleagues as well as data- management and -engineering tasks aimed at enhancing the usability and synergy of the collected data from both theoretical simulations and experimental sources, ensuring optimal integration and application within our research framework. Thus, this position is ideal for an individual with a solid background in both theoretical chemistry and practical aspects of synchrotron and X-Ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL) experiments, combined with a foundation in femtochemistry and photophysics/chemistry and a deep understanding of scientific software development.
Our expectations of you
We are looking for a colleague who sees the fun in solving problems and working together to meet the projects’ goals. We expect you to have:

  • A solid, dual background spanning theoretical chemistry/molecular dynamics and X-Ray experiments.
  • Experience with data processing, management, and analysis during synchrotron and XFEL experiments.
  • Experience with modern, collaborative scientific software development.
  • A PhD or similar.
  • Technical expertise and joy in problem solving.
  • Leadership and tutoring skills.
  • Communication and personal interaction skills.
  • To be fluent in Danish and English.

Flexibility is essential, and the candidate is expected to contribute to experimental beamtimes as they come up during the project. An existing scientific/technical network is an advantage. We are looking for a team player who can also work independently, who is motivated to help make, and be part of, a dynamic research environment and who has a positive, flexible, and creative outlook.
What we offer in return
DTU stands out as one of Europe's premier technical institutions and is the foremost in the Nordic region. Our project, focusing on the fundamental science involved in improving battery technology will bring together experts from multiple departments within DTU, along with global researchers from various disciplines, creating an invigorating and vibrant setting. The research team fosters a welcoming and encouraging atmosphere, enabling us to achieve innovative outcomes that captivate the scientific community.
Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC).
It is a full-time position, 37 hours per week, starting as soon as possible with a fixed end date of 31 August 2027.
Application and contact
Please submit your online application no later than 19 March 2024 (23:59 Danish time). Open the “Apply now” link, fill out the form and attach your motivated application, CV, and exam certificates.
Applications sent by email will not be considered. If you would like additional information about the position, please contact Professor, Martin Meedom Nielsen on email [email protected]
Applications received after the deadline will not be considered.
All interested candidates irrespective of age, gender, race, disability, religion, or ethnic background are encouraged to apply.
Our “Molecular Movies” group in the 4DMAP Section of DTU Physics currently consists of two tenured faculty, two postdocs and four PhD students. We have an egalitarian and relaxed work culture, relying on everyone to be goal-oriented and willing to take ownership and responsibility for their own projects and their role in the Group efforts.
Technology for people
DTU develops technology for people. With our international elite research and study programmes, we are helping to create a better world and to solve the global challenges formulated in the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Hans Christian Ørsted founded DTU in 1829 with a clear mission to develop and create value using science and engineering to benefit society. That mission lives on today. DTU has 13,500 students and 6,000 employees. We work in an international atmosphere and have an inclusive, evolving, and informal working environment.
